A Reality of Argument/Discussion

As a member of a debating team in college, and as a participant in many formal and informal debates, I have learned one thing:

Someone who has a factual or logical argument presents it without being asked, right at the beginning of the discussion.

Those who lack such an argument, or who lack the skill to construct one if they had the information, generally resort to various tactics designed to obscure the fact that they have nothing.

These include, but are not limited to:

Personal attack of the opponent, on various levels;

Unsupported claims of intellectual superiority, thus entitling them to a “win” with no facts or logic;

Changing the subject;

Blaming others;

Justifying their own bad behavior with the claim of bad behavior on the part of others;

Appeal to authority, usually with misquotes, mischaracterizations or cherry-picked, out of context snippets.

etc, etc....

Most of this is quite common on the blogosphere.

Unfortunately, r108, you are frequently guilty of a number of these.

you call people liars.

When in a tight spot, you shift the subject.

You claim others ‘attacked’ you first to justify your language and behavior.

You parse and cherry-pick with the best of them.

pparets,

Wikipedia:

In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others.

Nunez on July 1, 2008 at 10:47 pm

What’s your logical and factual argument for “projection”?  You have yet to prove that you are not projecting, here.  In fact, you have yet to present any logical or factual arguments at all.  All you seem to have is ad hominem.  As I have already pointed out multiple times, that is usually a sign of a lack of anything more.  I know you would give a logical or factual argument, if you had one.

This post has a stench of projection bias.

Starting with pp’s projection of what “moderate” means, like referring to govt-imposed rationing of energy as a “moderate policy”.  Of course, he never proved that case, either.  It was an unsupported statement.

Your lack of valid argument on everything is incapable of putting me in a “tight spot”.  Projecting again?  I have yet to see you admit any mistakes, even when you are thoroughly disproved.

I’m sure you would make a valid argument, if you had one.

robert108.  I agree with your post.  There are some here who merely make outrageous statements with no basis.  Some attempt to bait people with virtual slaps at their integrity.  Yes, you can Say Anything, but should label statements as opinion.  The old newspapers began putting opinion on their front/news pages several decades ago.  There are some who debate with facts.  Most honest people here will admit when they are wrong.  The dishonest ones refuse to.

Oh please.

When the law was quoted to you about the justification for Gore challenging the election you screamed “Liar”.  According to you it is impossible to have a disagreement with you, because everybody is a liar if they don’t agree.

You state your opinion and call it fact all the time.

‘Projection’ doesn’t work in this context. The rest of your rant is simply ‘Changing the Subject,’ for example, when you stated that Iraq is the only democratic country in the Middle East.

You consistently rant about other people’s comprehension, but your inability to notice that saying that you don’t know Israel is a democracy in the Middle East was an example of how you continually change the subject.

I think we all agree with bobbie blue and his post here. The point is that he is a hypocrite who doesnt practice what preaches in any way shape or form. For little bobbie blue to rail about how others debate is like Sadaam complaining that he didnt get a fair trial.
My continuing problem with little bobbie blue is that he doesnt know his shit stinks just like evryone elses. He is the biggest hypocrite here, as he posts more bullshit than anyone else(going on 20,000), and thinks falsly that he knows everything. He doesnt. The things that he does know are tainted by his lack of self awareness and his total hypocracy. Thanks again bobbie blue for showing your true self. You make it easy to disregard you.

Here is my challenge to you:

But if you can’t---and we all know you can’t---you send me $20 via PayPal.

That’s 10 to 1 odds, kid, and since you’re sooooooo factual and logical it should be no problem.

So, you’re trying to generalize everything I write from a tiny misstatement?  In fact, it was part of a larger discussion about the benefits of our going to Iraq, so while it was technically(there’s that nitpicking out of context) incorrect, my point about the beneficial effect of freeing the Iraqi people to have self-determination is a good thing.
You’ll have to do better than that bit of dishonesty.

Nietzsche is peachy!
Some of the things he said were quite profound, others profoundly misogynistic!
He was a mixed bag, like most of us.

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

I dont know about this whole crowd, but I do think alot of people have a hard time with him because his ideas were based on self awareness and what really motivates human behavior and prejudices. These are traits that are discouraged in our society and others, as they lead to independent thought and non conformity. That of course leads to a splintering of the voting blocks and an unpredictable electorate.
Plus, sheep need a shepard. Shepards need sheep. The problem is that the sheep dont know the shepard really works for the wolves.
