A Great American Lady Passes: Eunice Kennedy Shriver
The least political of all the Kennedys, and devoted to her mentally handicapped sister Rose, Eunice Kennedy Shriver dedicated her time and talent to helping those in need.
Prefering to remain in the background, Mrs. Shriver worked tirelessly on behalf of challenged children. She sponsored a summer camp for them at a time when mentally handicapped children were not welcome in other camps.
She was instrumental in establishing the Special Olympics, which encouraged challenged children to compete in friendly, competitive sports events. Today, virtually every state in the Union has a Special Olympics program, thanks to her efforts.
Her only known political activity was to campaign on behalf of her brother, John F. Kennedy, in his successful bid to win the White House.
She has earned a small niche in the American pantheon, and that is exactly how she would want it.
