worse than snakes on a plane? escaped cheetahs

ATLANTA (AP) — A Delta baggage worker got a bit of a fright before Halloween when she opened a jetliner’s cargo door and found a cheetah running loose amid the luggage. Two cheetahs were being flown in the cargo area of a Boeing 757 passenger flight from Portland, Ore., to Atlanta on Thursday when one escaped from its cage, Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said Friday.

“They told us a large animal had gotten out of a container in the cargo hold and they were having to send someone to tranquilize it,” said one passenger, Lee Sentell of Montgomery, Ala.

economy not slowing down hunters

In the heart of South Dakota’s pheasant-hunting country, license sales have been strong this fall despite gasoline prices near $3 a gallon and a looming recession. Ditto for hunting license sales in New York, Utah and Colorado. The leading retailers of outdoor gear, meanwhile, say sales of shotguns, ammunition and warm camouflage clothes aren’t too bad considering the economy’s headwinds.

Friday Outdoors

Hey Happy Halloween....similar to deer season you can recall Halloweens with lot’s of snow, no snow, hot weather, cold weather. Indeed we’re now a week away from the North Dakota deer opener. I’ve talked alot about safety, but not enough about contacting landowners and doing some scouting. This is as good of a weekend, and the only two day run you’ve got left. Best make sure you’ve got a spot for the Friday high noon opener. After that, time to get the ol rifle out and sight that bad boy in. Good luck--enjoy the weekend--outdoors.

ND Outdoors update

Quick update from the corn/sunflower report for North Dakota this week. It’s no surprise the corn harvest only increased from 3% to 4% from last week. Then look at the other numbers. The long term averaage is 51% and so was the completion % at this time last year. Let’s hope we can turn the corner in the next week, leading upto the deer season. I had two roosters on Saturday while checking out the waterfowl migration run right into the corn from the muddy/wet ditch...yep....it’s wet out there in central dakota.
The mountain lion taken last Saturday (October 25th) near Lone Butte.  The lion was a 74 pound, 1-2.5 year female.  This is the third lion taken in zone 1. Remember the quota for the area is 8 this season.

lost your tag?

One last reminder on finding your deer license. If you lost it and don’t get your replacement application in NOW, getting the tag before the opener diminishes every day. So look, find, or....to get a replacement tag, it will cost half-price and the application for a replacement is found on the Game and Fish Department website. http://www.gf.nd.gov. Then click on ‘online services” and on the bottom right is printable applications. That’s where you’ll need to go. Print if off, fill it out and send it in. Now, don’t wait until the week before the season. You’ll be filling out paper work while the rest are deer hunting....

more agencies eliminate hunting big game over bait

The U.S. Forest Service is the latest land management agency in North Dakota to prohibit hunting big game and other wildlife over bait. Dave Pieper, Grasslands supervisor, signed an order in September prohibiting hunting over bait on the Dakota Prairie Grasslands.

Along with the U.S. Forest Service’s national grasslands, hunting over bait is also not allowed on all North Dakota Game and Fish Department wildlife management areas, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service national wildlife refuges and waterfowl production areas, and all North Dakota state school, park and forest service lands.

Hunting over bait is defined as the placement and/or use of baits for attracting big game and other wildlife to a specific location for the purpose of hunting.

Baits include but are not limited to grains, minerals, salts, fruits, vegetables, hay or any other natural or manufactured foods. It does not apply to the use of scents and lures, water, food plots, standing crops, or livestock feeds being used in standard practices.

CWD survillance

The state Game and Fish Department will continue its Hunter-Harvested Surveillance program during the 2008 hunting season by sampling deer for chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis from units in central North Dakota. In addition, all moose and elk harvested in the state, regardless of hunting units, are eligible for sampling.

Samples from hunter-harvested deer will be tested from units 2H, 2I, 2J1, 2J2, 2K1, 2K2, 3A4, 3B3 and 3C. In addition, the Game and Fish Department will continue last fall’s bovine tuberculosis testing in northeastern North Dakota by collecting 250 samples from deer harvested from units 2C and 2D.

Participating hunters whose deer have been sampled will have their names entered in a drawing for five muzzleloaders and 100 Sagen Saws. Winners will be randomly selected and notified by the end of December.

Hunters are encouraged to drop off deer heads at locations in: Ashley – Ashley Super Valu Store; Bismarck – Game and Fish Department headquarters office, Call of the Wild Taxidermy, M&M Sausage and Meats; Bottineau – Davidson’s Processing; Carrington – Barton Meats, Barlow Meats; Devils Lake – Devils Lake Game and Fish district office; Edgeley – Edgeley Meat Processing; Garrison – Garrison Custom Meats; Granville – S&E Meats; Harvey – Lonetree Game and Fish district office; Heaton – Miller Game Processing; Jamestown – Jamestown Game and Fish district office; Karlsruhe – Leier’s Processing; Kulm – Peoples Meat Market; Linton – Bosch’s Meat Market, Schmaltz Meats; Mandan – Butcher Block Meats; Minot – Hensen’s Fur and Leather; Moffit – Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge office; Riverdale – Riverdale Game and Fish district office; Sheyenne – Brenno Meats; Steele – Devore Custom Meats; Turtle Lake – Barry’s Jack and Jill; Upham – J. Clark Salyer NWR office; and Woodworth – Chase Lake NWR office.

Drop off locations for deer taken from Units 2C and 2D are in Edinburg – Ellingson Meats; Fordville – Baier Body and Glass; and Langdon – Hickory Hut.

Every head sampled must have either the deer tag attached, or a new tag can be filled out with the license number, deer hunting unit and date harvested attached. Skull caps and antlers can be removed. Fawns will not be tested.

CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal. Scientists have found no evidence that CWD can be transmitted naturally to humans or livestock. To date, CWD has not been diagnosed in wild or farmed deer or elk in North Dakota.

The Game and Fish Department continues to sample the entire state over a three-year period. Animals in eastern North Dakota were tested in 2007, while the western third of the state is scheduled for 2009.

89 year old isnt to old to bag a buck

89-year-old Delores Wilhelms hadn't hunted in northern Wisconsin since 2002. This year, despite being told by some folks she was too old, she used her late husband's crossbow to take a 3-point buck, with the aid of a helpful neighbor. "It's a thrill I tell you. I hope God lets me live long enough to do it again next year," Delores said. Fond du Lac Reporter.

deer--choice meat for Chinese chef’s

A Chinese restaurant in the Town of Hamburg was shut down by the Erie County Health Department Friday after an inspector found employees butchering a deer inside.

Officials don’t know whether the dead deer at China King, 5999 South Park Ave., had been hunted or if it was road kill.

“From our standpoint, it doesn’t matter,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Anthony J. Billittier IV. “They can’t do what we think they did.”
