SEALs court martial: Navy judge orders trials moved to Iraq
By Hugh Lessig
Daily Press
NORFOLK—Two of the three Navy SEALs accused of mistreating a suspected terrorist will have the chance to confront their accuser in open court—in Iraq.
...
The ruling is a victory for defense attorneys who wanted to question Abed face to face. Prosecutors sought to go forward with a videotaped deposition instead.
“If he is available for deposition, he is available for trial,” said Cmdr. Tierney Carlos during a procedural hearing at Naval Station Norfolk.
Obama 2010: Pitchforks and arugula
By Karl

Message: I care, you bitter clingers!
Since his party lost the special election to fill Ted Kennedy’s Massachusetts Senate seat, pundits have been proclaiming President Barack Obama in need of a new message. As this week drew to a close, he offered some samples of what it will sound like.
Turning up the volume on the fiery populist rhetoric he’s been deploying against the Wall Street “fat cats” that have become a favorite target, Obama signaled that he intends to pursue new Wall Street regulations as well as health care reform, despite his party having lost its 60-seat supermajority in the Senate.
Of course, Obama played the faux-populism card in the 2008 campaign, too. The reality was a bit different.
Barack Obama’s first major step on the campaign trail — in December 2006 — was to Wall Street, where he snagged the backing of convicted inside trader George Soros and investment banker Robert Wolf, who became CEO of UBS Americas. Before the Wall Street meltdown got into full swing, Swiss banking giant UBS had written off more debt from the subprime mortgage crisis than any other bank; a number of Obama’s top bundlers came from with firms mired in that mess. Such bundlers raised at least 22 percent of Obama’s money during the first half of 2007, and got perks from the Obama campaign. Indeed, Obama’s national campaign-finance chairwoman, Penny Pritzker, helped run Superior Bank — which was at the forefront of securitizing of subprime mortgages, until it collapsed in 2001.
When Wall Street went into meltdown mode, the establishment media ignored that Obama got big donations from associates of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and was one of the all-time recipents of political cash from Lehman Brothers. Before the election Obama voted for TARP. After the election, Obama twisted arms to get the second half of the TARP money, and packed the key economic positions in his White House with the very people who caused the crisis in the first place.

Five Memes Destroyed
by Scott Brown’s Victory
by John Hawkins
PajamasMedia
On Tuesday night, Scott Brown shocked the world by defeating Martha Coakley and capturing the seat that Ted Kennedy held for more than 40 years. It was a momentous election, not just because it featured a Republican ending the Democrats’ filibuster-proof majority by capturing a seat in deep-blue Massachusetts, but because it shattered a number of memes that have been treated in many circles as conventional wisdom:
By the numbers, the memes are:
1. The GOP is just a regional party that’s limited to the south.
2. There has been a political realignment.
3. Health care reform is a winning issue for the Democrats.
4. Conservatives want to drive moderates from the party.
5. Barack Obama’s charisma can carry the Democrats through to victory.
So when one of our trolls harks back to one of these thoroughly busted memes, just post the number and move on!
Who could have seen this coming, what with the ongoing threats of confiscatory tax policy and regulation out the yazoo…
Jobless Claims in U.S. Unexpectedly Rise
on Backlog
By Bob Willis
Business WeekJan. 21 (Bloomberg)—More Americans than anticipated filed claims for unemployment benefits last week, reflecting a backlog of applications from the year-end holidays.
Initial jobless claims rose by 36,000 to 482,000 in the week ended Jan. 16, the highest level in two months, from 446,000 the prior week, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The jump was due to an “administrative” accumulation from late December and early January holidays, and did not reflect “economic” reasons, a Labor Department spokesman said.
Odd that all of the Obama Administration adjustments are for the worse.

And the reason it will die … [pauses for effect] … Let’s continue … The reason it will die is because if Coakley loses, Democrats will only then have an eighteen-vote majority in the Senate. Which is more than George W. Bush ever had in the Senate, when he did whatever the f*** he wanted to do! [Applause] In fact, the Democrats have a greater majority than the Republicans have had since 1923! But for Democrats, apparently a majority of 100 is … sixty.
...and…
We set the bar to high for the Democrats. We should have just left it on the ground and let them trip over it.
Indeed.

Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd won’t seek reelection,
will retire at end of term
By Chris Cillizza
The Washington PostEmbattled Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday at which he is expected to announce he will not seek reelection, sources familiar with his plans said Tuesday night.
Word of Dodd’s retirement plans comes after months of speculation about his political future, his faltering poll numbers and a growing sense among the Democratic establishment that he could not win a sixth term in the Senate. The news also came on the same day Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced he would not seek reelection.
Once among the safest of incumbents, Dodd’s political star fell over a two-year period, during which he moved his family to Iowa to pursue the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination and was linked to a VIP mortgage loan program overseen by a controversial Wall Street financier. He also drew harsh questions about his oversight of Wall Street, as chair of the Senate Banking Committee, in the years when the nation’s financial system was heading toward near collapse.
Goodbye, Chris, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

New allegations insist the full board was not informed of the falsification of qualifications prior to the vote despite the chair and legal counsel being aware of the issue:
Still shameful
[California] Air board’s response to scandal is appalling
Editorial
The San Diego Union TribuneBeginning with two editorials in late December 2008, this editorial page repeatedly has criticized the California Air Resources Board for its headline-hunting decision to adopt unprecedentedly sweeping and costly diesel-emission rules at its meeting earlier that month. Soon after that meeting, we had confirmed that Hien Tran – lead author and coordinator of the study justifying the rules – lied about having a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California Davis.
Our subsequent reporting showed senior air board officials from Chairwoman Mary Nichols down knew of Tran’s academic fraud before the Dec. 12, 2008, vote but chose not to inform the public, the media or most of the board members who voted for the diesel rules.
The outrageousness of this deceit is finally being acknowledged. One of the board members who was kept in the dark – Fresno cardiologist John Telles – learned of the deception earlier this fall. Now Telles and another board member, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, are calling for suspension of the diesel rules.
But the reaction from the agency’s hierarchy and board members to this common-sense request has been obtuse to the extreme.
Chief Counsel Ellen M. Peter told Telles that the board officials’ failure to reveal the deception before the Dec. 12 vote didn’t amount to a violation of proper procedures.
In a letter he co-wrote that was published in the Union-Tribune, board member John Balmes – who was informed of Tran’s fraud by e-mail on Dec. 11, 2008, and failed to tell Telles and other colleagues about it – rejected all criticism of the air board for its actions in the Tran matter. But in an e-mail to Telles, he said “in retrospect” the Tran report should have been withdrawn – which can’t be reconciled with his public comments.
Indeed not.
And now the industry upon which the consequences of this dubious study have been foisted is fighting back as well:
Truckers want CARB rule suspended in light of cover-up
Today’s Trucking.comSACRAMENTO—There are calls to suspend California’s statewide Truck and Bus Rule because of allegations that research behind the legislation was tainted.
Members of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have taken to the media to request that the board suspend the truck rule, which would require exhaust filter retrofits and engine upgrades starting in 2011 and the replacement of pre-2010 model engines between 2012 to 2022.
CARB members Ron Roberts and Dr. John Telles allege that CARB had tried to cover up that the lead scientist and coordinator of the research used to justify the new emissions rules, had lied about holding a Ph.D. in statistics.
Hien T. Tran’s Ph.D. was the mail-order version, according to local media reports, and senior CARB officials were aware that his falsified credentials before voting on the truck retrofit legislation.
It’s the “...scientific-technological elite.” ensuring themselves of continuing funding by milking a non-existant crises.

(more...)Fort Hood suspect charged with attempted murder
By Angela K. Brown
AP
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The Army has charged the suspect in the Fort Hood shooting spree with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.
The charges are in addition to the 13 premeditated murder charges filed against Maj. Nidal (Nee-DAHL) Hasan (Huh-SAHN’) in the Nov. 5 massacre at Fort Hood.
The Army says the attempted murder charges filed Wednesday are related to the 30 soldiers and two civilian police officers injured in the shooting at a soldier processing center on the central Texas post.
