Letters to editor harder to write with head up own ass

Yes, this is a real letter to the editor to a Canadian newspaper.

“Gen. Hillier’s proposal to disregard the education and talents of new and potential recruits by forcing them into front-line combat roles in Afghanistan for two years before allowing them the privilege to proceed to the professions they applied for, changes the perspective potential recruits will have of the military as an employer. “

A moral question

Cross-posted from Rob B. at fileitunder.com:

Consider this: The NCAA, in an effort to be PC has declared that schools that have Indian mascots should change their names because it could be considered harmful, or wrong to native Americans.

*snip*

My question is, does the NCAA have the right to mandate what is acceptable in a schools name over the quasi-judgment over what “might be” offensive to native Americans?

NYT makes pre-emptive worst-case strike

If the Dems fail to retake one or both sides of Congress next month, the New York Times has the early meme locked and loaded.

Via Drudge

With an unusually large number of tight races and dozens of states shifting to new electronic voting systems, election officials across the country are bracing for long lines and heightened confusion at the polls on Election Day, Nov. 7, the NEW YORK TIMES will front on Thursday.

Got it? If the Dems fail in their quest to retake Congress, it’s the fault of electronic voting machines, long lines and confusion.

A.K.A. - Karl Rove!

Update: The NYT article here. (more...)

Why dogs are better than cats reason #2,490,154

Free Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com

After a disabled woman’s cat started a house fire, her specially trained dog came to the rescue, then died trying unsuccessfully to rescue the cat.

Stupid cat.

“And he jumped onto a table that had a candle on it and tipped it over and lighted the artificial plants on fire,” she said.

Dog +s: selfless, loyal and brave - man’s best friend
Dog -s: must poop outside

Cat +s: can poop in a box
Cat -s: start house fires, cause deaths of hero dogs, consume 74% of the subject matter discussed on blogs

I question the apathy…

In what might be the greatest election non-event since Pedro let students beat up a pinata of Summer Wheatly, CNN has the story that I’m sure they were loathe to cover. According to polls less than 1/4 of Americans polled thought that the Foley Scandal was “extremely important” in how they vote in November’s congressional elections.

More delicious rant…

‘I’m not promiscuous.’

Of course you’re not, Scarlett, you delicious little flirt morsel.

“There does seem to be a mistaken belief out there that I am sexually available somehow — which is not to say that I’m not open-minded about sex,” she continues. “Yet I wouldn’t say I’m a serial monogamist, either. I mean, I went through periods of time when I was, ah, single. But when I’m in a relationship, I’m in a relationship.”

Rrrrarrr!  And besides, who are we to judge?

“I do think on some basic level we are animals, and by instinct we kind of breed accordingly.”

You make it sound so primal.  So. Primal.

“But as much as I believe that, I work really hard when I’m in a relationship to make it work in a monogamous way.”

Don’t fight who you really are.  Life is too short.

How do you invest your time?

Because Akira Haraguchi has invested… I’d say a significant portion of his life dedicated to pi

Akira Haraguchi, 60, needed more than 16 hours to recite the number to 100,000 decimal places, breaking his personal best of 83,431 digits set in 1995, his office said Wednesday. He made the attempt at a public hall in Kisarazu, just east of Tokyo.

Pi is a physical constant defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Let that sink in.  This guy has memorized pi to 100,000 decimal places.  I don’t know 95% of the phone numbers listed in my cell phone - if it goes, my contacts go.

Now if you want to downplay this accomplishment, pi has an infinite number of decimals, as it never repeats.  So percentage-wise, Haraguchi has memorized 100,000/infinity = 0.  So he’s accomplished nothing.

Missle ‘splosions 101

This is a great side-by-side comparison of what Israeli missle strikes are claimed to have done versus what they actually do.

Though, in Pallywood’s defense, the IDF could be testing out a missle who’s payload is rotating sledgehammers. (h/t Tim Blair)
