Tradition of “Mooning The Amtrak”

Patrons keep alive the cheeky tradition and the Mugs Away Saloon’s ritual attracts thousands of bare bums to Southern California every second Saturday in July. On the day of the annual “Mooning of the Amtrak” you’ll find crowds of cars, campers, trailers, trucks, motor homes and motor cycles all over the area. People of ALL sizes, shapes, gender, and adult ages imaginable attend the gathering.

It all started in 1979, at The Mugs Away Saloon, K.T.Smith told his buddies he’d buy a drink for anyone who would “moon” the next train, which many did. The mooning tradition has prevailed, but there is no longer a volunteer to buy free drinks for thousands of “Mooners.” The train rides for that particular Saturday are booked a year in advance.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THE MOONING? No one. No one organizes or is responsible for this annual event. It just happens!
Useless knowledge is fun, huh?
