The Brave New World Awaits

“The Federal Communications Commission has a vague rule called

“localism,”

which requires stations to serve the interests of their local communities in order to hold onto their broadcast licenses. Obama, who gets to replace FCC Chairman Kevin Martin right away, needs only three votes from the five-member FCC to define localism his way.

This is the template that Obama, Podesta, and their FCC maven Rivera intend to use to do something about the curse of conservative talk radio in America: Redefine FCC

“localism”

to give community activists the right to demand more local, liberal content. If station ownership does not comply, then licenses will be revoked and given to minority owners.

One of the more clever aspects of this

“localism”

plan is that, should a station lose its license to a liberal owner whose content will reflect his/her views, then there will be no Fairness Doctrine around to require equal time from aggrieved conservative listeners.

Christian radio stations will be saddled with local Muslim “advisory boards” demanding equal time and getting it. The Brave New World awaits.”

The Four Horsemen of Barack Obama

Why markets are predicting apocalypse

KEVIN A. HASSETT @ National Review

According to the University of Iowa’s presidential-futures market, John McCain’s prospects peaked on March 22, 2008. By that day it was clear he’d be the nominee, though he had not yet been officially nominated. The market implied that his odds of winning the White House were 55 percent.

But then financial markets began their historic fall, which accelerated as the campaign wore on. When McCain’s probability of winning was at its peak, the S&P 500 index stood at 1,329.54. By November 5, it had dropped 28.3 percent, to 952.77

. The question: Did the tanking economy help Obama; did the economy tank as a reaction to the fact that Obama might become president; neither; or both?

Democratic partisans prefer the first explanation. Nobel Prize–winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, for example, recently wrote that “Barack Obama owes his victory in large measure to the prospect of the longest and deepest economic downturn in a quarter-century and perhaps since the Great Depression.”

Stiglitz is right. The link between bad economic news and diminishing prospects for the presidential candidate who represents the incumbent party is older than sliced bread, and has been carefully documented by Yale economist Ray Fair.

But Stiglitz is only half right, because the negative correlation between Obama’s prospects and stock prices reflected an ominous feedback loop: As Obama’s odds of winning rose, markets tanked; as they tanked, Obama’s odds of winning rose.

America, thy name is Ignorance

Americans don’t know civics
By Michelle Healy, USA TODAY

From high-school dropouts to college graduates to elected officials, Americans are “alarmingly uninformed” about the USA’s history, founding principles and economy — knowledge needed to participate wisely in civic life, says a report scheduled to be released Thursday.

The study, the third in a series by the non-profit Intercollegiate Studies Institute, finds that half of U.S. adults can name all three branches of government, and 54% know that the power to declare war belongs to Congress. Almost 40% incorrectly said that it belongs to the president.

USA TODAY ON POLITICS: The Dems vs. GOP side of civics scores

And while 56% can name Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol, only 21% know that the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” comes from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Just 54% can correctly identify a basic description of the free enterprise system.

Those who have held elected office lack civic knowledge; 43% do not know the Electoral College is a constitutionally mandated assembly that elects the president. One in five thinks it “trains those aspiring for higher office” or “was established to supervise the first televised presidential debates.”

“Without knowledge of your country’s history, key texts and institutions, you don’t have a frame of reference to judge the politics and policies of today,” says Richard Brake, head of the institute’s American Civic Literacy Program.

Earlier reports focused solely on college students; the new study expands the focus and concludes Americans across all economic, educational and political/social backgrounds are equally lacking. Among findings:

• 71% earn an F; the average score was 49%. Ages 25 to 34 had an average score of 46%; ages 45 to 64 had a 52% average. Of 164 respondents who say they have held elected office, 44% was average.

• Those with bachelor’s degrees had an average score of 57% vs. 44% for those with a high-school diploma. The average score for advanced degree-holders inches up to 65%, or a D.

• Civic knowledge declines in proportion to time spent using passive media, such as TV. Reading and talking about history and current events, using the Internet and being involved in political activities has a positive effect.

O wide world of little faith: Don’t blow it!

Win One For the Messiah!
Excuse me if I remain unmoved by the misguided religious fervor.
By Victor Davis Hanson

“The world may be temporarily awestruck with the wise and all-powerful Obama, but it’s not quite ready to coalesce into a kinder, gentler global family — one people, under one Messiah, indivisible, with peace and justice for all.

In fact, Vladimir Putin doesn’t care a whit that Barack Obama is a path-breaking African-American, much less the first person of color to be an American president. The Chinese can’t quite appreciate in translation Obama’s mellifluous cadences. France’s cool Sarkozy isn’t swayed much by the Obama sunglasses, snazzy polo shirt, or nifty outside jump shot.

All these states have interests — not deities. For the most part, either their enmity with or fondness for the United States antedated George Bush. The world’s mental map wasn’t erased away when Bush took power. Being the planet’s most powerful democracy, and a free and confident world peacekeeper, either excites admiration or earns envy — and even the most crude or the most elegant American president can’t change much that simple fact of global human nature.

To the small degree Obama’s superior charm and style will improve things, the Russians may toast, backslap, and bear hug Obama — before seeking to body slam him against the wall on Polish anti-missile sites. The smiling Europeans will scurry around mumbling “Yes, but of course!” — as they shirk even more. An unhinged President Ahmadinejad will endlessly write rambling letters to Barack Hussein Obama as the last centrifuges come on line. The jihadists will sigh rather than swear as they continue to try to blow us all up.”

Physician, Heal Thyself

NRA News

“The New England Journal of Medicine isn’t too happy about the Supreme Court decision affirming an individual right to keep and bear arms. In fact, the journal has a new editorial out criticizing the decision. In it, three doctors write that “closer regulation promotes the public health.”

The doctors say that there is no constitutional impediment to any kind of “regulation” of firearms. And the doctors believe “logic tells us that fewer restrictions on handguns will result in a substantial increase in injury and death.”

Let’s take these three arguments one at a time. First of all, can you imagine doctors in charge of doling out First Amendment “privileges”? Perhaps a study from the CDC on the dangers of increased likelihood of heart attacks after listening to (or calling in to) talk radio shows?

Americans would be outraged, just as they should be outraged at these doctors calling for restrictions on your Second Amendment rights as a matter of “public health.”

The doctors misread the Constitution and the Supreme Court decision when they say there’s no impediment to any kind of regulation of firearms. There’s the little matter of “shall not be infringed,” but there’s also the Court’s decision striking down D.C.‘s gun ban.

And finally, logic does NOT tell us that increased gun ownership leads to increases in injury and death. As a matter of fact, accidental firearm fatalities have plummeted in this country, even while legal gun ownership has increased.

I have no idea how good these doctors may be when it comes to saving individual patients, but when it comes to diagnosing the Second Amendment, they’re a bunch of quacks.”

‘Obama Warned of ‘Huge’ Terror Plot ’

Friday, November 14, 2008 11:56 PM
British security officials say intelligence experts are seriously concerned that al-Qaida will try to pull off a “spectacular” terrorist attack during the transition period from a Bush administration to an Obama administration.

In fact, British Home Office Security Minister Sir Alan West raised the specter of a “huge threat” and noted that “There is another great plot building up again and we are monitoring this,” according to the London Times.

Bush administration officials also point out that terrorists have often struck during a time of official change:

The first World Trade Center attack came just weeks after President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.

9/11 occurred less than a year after President George W. Bush took office in 2001.

British officials thwarted nightclub and airport plots soon after Gordon Brown became prime minister in June 2007.

Earlier this week, CIA Director Michael Hayden said that al-Qaida remains the single greatest threat to the United States.

According to the Times, al-Qaida has been experimenting with biological weapons, such as anthrax.

And Vice President-elect Joe Biden warned during the last month of the presidential election: “Watch, we’re going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle [of Obama].”

Marxist Director of Intercultural Affairs At Pepperdine University Denies Student’s Voice

Lawrence of Eurabia
by Mike S. Adams

The following is, unfortunately, a true story that took place this semester at the once-great (and once-conservative) Pepperdine University. No names have been changed to protect the guilty. They don’t deserve it.

One Monday morning, just before the 2008 presidential election, a Pepperdine student (and College Republican, or CR) took a sign to the Office of Student Affairs.

The sign read “Barack Obama socialism ‘08” in big letters, with “Socialism is bad. Do not vote Obama ’08. More info: CR meeting Weds 8pm, AC 245”.

A young woman working in the office took out a stamp and approved the poster.

Three members of the CRs hung the sign up in the Café. A couple of faculty members smiled and warned them to be careful since they were placing it up so high. Pepperdine students gave mixed reactions. The CRs sat in the Café awhile and then left. Shortly thereafter, their sign was removed.

Chris Garcia, the Vice President of the CRs, and another CR named Wesley Heuler found the sign, which had been moved to Pepperdine’s “Freedom Wall”.

They took the sign down and put it back up in the Café. It was yet again taken down. So a member of the CRs named Mimi Rothfus went to Student Affairs. (Roughly) the following conversation ensued:

Mimi Rothfus: Hi, I brought a sign in earlier, and it was approved. We put it up; it was taken down. When we put it up again, it was again removed. I had two stamps of approval on this poster, so why was it removed?

Student Affairs: This is partially our fault because we should never have approved this in the first place. We got a lot of phone calls complaining.

New New Deal Watch

Paul Rubin in the Wall Street Journal writes:

In 1932, Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president as the nation was heading into a severe recession.

The stock market had crashed in 1929, the world’s economy was slowing down, and all economic indicators in the U.S. showed signs of trouble.

The new president’s response was to restructure the economy with the New Deal—an expansion of the role of government once unimaginable in America.

We now know that FDR’s policies likely prolonged the Great Depression because the economy never fully recovered in the 1930s, and actually got worse in the latter half of the decade. And we know that FDR got away with it (winning election four times) by blaming his predecessor, Herbert Hoover, for crashing the economy in the first place.

Today, the U.S. is in better shape than in 1932. But it faces similar circumstances. The stock market has been in a tail spin, credit markets have locked up, and the Democratic president elect plans on expanding the role of government, laying the blame for the economic turmoil on the current occupant of the White House and his party’s economic policies.

Barack Obama is one of the most liberal members of the Senate. His reaction to the financial crisis is to blame deregulation. He even leverages fear of deregulation onto other issues.

“The Porno-fication of Rush Limbaugh”

The Porno-fication of Rush Limbaugh
by A.W.R. Hawkins
11/11/2008

It ain’t pornography, Sen. Schumer—it’s freedom.

Because of Rush Limbaugh’s success as the trendsetter and trailblazer of talk radio, the self-proclaimed “Doctor of Democracy” has been called everything from “a big, fat idiot,” by that big, fat, idiot Al Franken, to “hateful” and “unpatriotic” by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

But Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently took accusations and name-calling to new low when he equated talk radio—and by implication Limbaugh—with pornography.

This accusation was part of Schumer’s argument that the government ought to be able to “regulate” talk radio because it regulates pornography.

In a Fox News interview, Schumer said, “The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC to limit pornography on the air.

I am for that… But you can’t say government hands off in one area to a commercial enterprise but you are allowed to intervene in another.”

This is just Schumer’s attempt to justify reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, which was a FCC regulation that Ronald Reagan struck down in 1987.

It required that radio stations which aired an hour of one type of media—conservative talk radio for example—air an equal amount of an opposing viewpoint—liberal talk radio in this instance.

Reagan saw this law for what it was: a means to stifle free, market-driven speech, and he liberated us from it. When he did, Limbaugh took to the airwaves in Sacramento, California.

“Your child belongs to us already”

Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg

“In this provocative and well-researched book, Goldberg probes modern liberalism’s spooky origins in early 20th-century fascist politics.

With chapter titles such as Adolf Hitler: Man of the Left and Brave New Village: Hillary Clinton and the Meaning of Liberal Fascism—Goldberg argues that fascism has always been a phenomenon of the left.

Goldberg’s study of the conceptual overlap between fascism and ideas emanating from the environmental movement, Hollywood, the Democratic Party and what he calls other left-wing organs is shocking and hilarious.”

Publisher’s Weekly

Since Plato’s Republic, politicians, intellectuals, and priests have been fascinated with the idea of “capturing” children for social- engineering purposes.

This is why Robespierre advocated that children be raised by the state.

Hitler—who understood as well as any the importance of winning the hearts and minds of youth—once re- marked, “When an opponent says ‘I will not come over to your side,’ I calmly say, ‘Your child belongs to us already…You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing but this new community.’”

Woodrow Wilson candidly observed that the primary mission of the educator was to make children as unlike their parents as possible.

Is the country still conservative?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

R.I.P America

“The November 4th election is being hailed as “transformational.”  It certainly has been personally transformational for me.

Grocery shopping at the local Giant supermarket is a very different experience now.  As I look at all the people scrutinizing the fruits and vegetables, telling the butcher what cut of meat they want, or walking down the aisles pushing their carts with a list in their hand, they all look so normal, just like before last week.

Yet I know that a majority of them are either suicidally insane, too stupid to know what they’ve done to themselves, or crypto-fascists.  Before last week, they were all my fellow Americans.  Now I don’t really know who or what they are.

They, together with 60-odd million others, have decided to lurch America radically and thoughtlessly to the left.”

“The Failure Factory ”

“How Unelected Bureaucrats, Liberal Democrats, and Big Government Republicans Are Undermining America’s Security and Leading Us to War”

The U.S. government is in crisis.

With America’s attention fixated on Obama in the Oval Office in 2009, no one has noticed where the real power has shifted—to a vast network of unelected officials whose authority has grown wildly out of control.

In his latest blockbuster book, acclaimed defense and national security reporter Bill Gertz exposes these astonishingly powerful leaders and their enablers in the political class—and their devastating impact on America’s national security.

Gertz shows how entrenched liberal activists have become dominant even under an ostensibly conservative administration. And he names names of those who actively subvert official U.S. policy—including not only liberal Democrats but also a number of so-called Republicans who have joined this insidious “Blame America First” crowd.

The Failure Factory reveals:

•The shocking, previously untold story of the partisan bureaucrats who completely undercut the U.S. position on Iran’s radical Islamist regime

•Barack Obama’s disastrous national security policies—and his stable of advisers who have already put America at risk

•The recent showdown in the Pentagon that laid bare the U.S. government’s ongoing failures to tackle the threat of Islamist extremism

•Flagrant cases of sabotage by top State Department officials that have emboldened dangerous states like Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Communist China

•Stunning new intelligence failures—including one that may have allowed a terrorist group to penetrate the FBI and CIA

•How even the Bush White House was overrun with Democrats and liberal Republicans

•The legions of “Clinton generals”—top military brass whose careers blossomed during the Clinton administration—who make the United States more vulnerable

•How Democrats are exploiting the antiwar movement for political gain, with little regard for the potentially devastating consequences

•How the defense secretary’s public defiance of official U.S. policy could have gotten him fired—but instead went unchallenged
