What Geithner Got Right

The criticism of his plan to stabilize the financial system came from all directions. House Republicans called it radical. Many liberal economists thought the plan was the product of hapless, zombie thinking and argued that only full bank nationalization would end the crisis. The Wall Street Journal asked 49 economists to grade Geithner. They gave him an F.

Well, the evidence of the past eight months suggests that Geithner was mostly right and his critics were mostly wrong. The financial sector is in much better shape than it was then. TARP money is being repaid, and the debate now is what to do with the billions that were never needed. It now seems clear that nationalization would have been an unnecessary mistake — potentially expensive and dangerously disruptive.

New Consensus Sees Stimulus Package as Worthy Step

The legislation, a variety of economists say, is helping an economy in free fall a year ago to grow again and shed fewer jobs than it otherwise would. Mr. Obama’s promise to “save or create” about 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010 is roughly on track, though far more jobs are being saved than created, especially among states and cities using their money to avoid cutting teachers, police officers and other workers.

“It was worth doing — it’s made a difference,” said Nigel Gault, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, a financial forecasting and analysis group based in Lexington, Mass.

Mr. Gault added: “I don’t think it’s right to look at it by saying, ‘Well, the economy is still doing extremely badly, therefore the stimulus didn’t work.’ I’m afraid the answer is, yes, we did badly but we would have done even worse without the stimulus.”

Another thing we’ll use against republicans next fall. Their bitter opposition to stopping the free fall of the economy.

Dear, Dirty Detroit

In one of his greatest novels, Ulysses, the Irish writer James Joyce famously referred to his nation’s capital as “dear, dirty Dublin,” thereby expressing his love-hate ambivalence toward the city and land of his birth. 

After many years in recovery from the repressive British yoke, Ireland, with Dublin as its centerpiece, would rise from Joyce’s dirt to become the vaunted Celtic Tiger of Europe with the Irish enjoying one of the most robust economies on the face of the planet.

James Joyce would be proud today.

Some of that luster has been lost in the current recession, due as much to the general downturn as to Ireland’s abandonment of proven successful, free enterprise, low taxation, fiscal policies.

Ireland could be an object lesson for the American city of Detroit were it not that Detroit were so far gone.  It would be a real stretch for any Detroiter to find much Joycean love for that city.

Once the 4th largest city in America, Detroit is almost moribund.  The most liberal big city in the nation has slipped to 11th largest as things became worse and worse and about a million of its citizens gave up and fled.

It has been suggested the best thing to do with this crime-ravaged and economically-destitute town is to bulldoze it and begin all over again.

Would that bulldozing were feasible.

As Rich Lowry wrote on Realclearpolitics.com, Detroit “stands as a stark statement of the failure of urban liberalism.”

Detroit’s decline and fall may have begun with the race riots stoked by MLK in 1968 but the election in 1974 of its first black mayor, Coleman Young, clearly greased the skids.  The collapse and bailout of the auto industry merely iced the cake with rancid topping.

Young would reign for 20 years. . . .

New York, terror trial capital of the US

New York’s federal courts have seen many major terrorist trials since the early 1990s, several involving Al Qaeda-linked operatives.

1993-94: Trial in first World Trade Center bombing.

On Feb. 26, 1993, an explosive-packed Ryder truck was driven into the garage of the World Trade Center in New York, killing 6 people and injuring more than 1,000. After a six month trial with 204 witnesses and 1,000 pieces of evidence, all four defendants were convicted. Each receives a 240-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole.

1994-95: “Day of Terror” trial.

Twelve defendants, including “Blind Cleric” Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, were tried for a terror plot thwarted by the FBI in June 1993. Followers of Sheikh Rahman planned to bomb prominent sites in New York City, including the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln & Holland Tunnels, the United Nations, and the New York FBI office. Ten defendants were convicted and sentenced to 25 to 85 years in prison. Two pleaded guilty and received life sentences.

1995-96: “Manila Air” plot.

Ramzi Yousef, nephew of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, was one of three defendants tried in Manhattan Federal Court in a plot to plant a bomb in a dozen US commercial jetliners timed to go off when they were over the Pacific. Mr. Yousef, Abdul Hakim Murad, and Wali Khan Amin Shah were all convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, with Yousef sentenced to life in prison plus 240 years.

1997: Trial of Ramzi Yousef for his role as mastermind of the first World Trade Center bombing. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

1998: East Africa American embassy bombings.

US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, were bombed, killing 224 people and injuring more than 4,000. Osama bin Laden and 22 others were indicted for their role in the attacks; four were caught and convicted. Another suspect, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian national, is scheduled to be tried in September 2010.

2002: Millennium bombing plot.

Algerian nationals Mokhtar Haouari, Abdel Ghani Meskini, and Ahmed Ressam were charged in a conspiracy to bomb the Los Angeles airport during the millennium celebrations. Tried in a New York federal court, Mr. Haouari was convicted of conspiring to supply material support to Mr. Ressam’s plan to enter the US from Canada and set off a bomb at the L.A. airport. He was sentenced to 24 years. Meskini entered a plea agreement with the Justice department to testify against other suspects in exchange for a lighter sentence. Mr. Ressam testified against Haouari, and was sentenced in 2005 by a Los Angeles court to 22 years in prison.

2004-06: New York subway bomb plot.

James Elshafay and Shahawar Matin Siraj, both US citizens, were arrested for plotting to bomb a subway station near Madison Square Garden in New York City before the Republican National Convention. Mr. Siraj was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Mr. Elshafay pleaded guilty and received a five-year sentence for testifying against his co-conspirator.

2007-ongoing: JFK Airport bomb plot.

Four men were arrested in June 2007 over a plot to bomb fuel lines connected to the JFK airport in New York. Abdel Nur and Abdul Kadir of Guyana, cleric Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad, and Guyana-born US citizen Russell Defreitas allegedly planned to use bombs in order to ignite millions of gallons of jet fuel at the airport. The plot reportedly never went beyond the planning stages. Mr. Defreitas was arrested in Brooklyn. The other three were detained in Trinidad and extradited in June 2008. The men pleaded not guilty to the charges and are awaiting trial.

2009: Oregon terrorist training camp

Lebanese-born Swedish citizen Oussama Kassir was arrested in Prague in 2005 on a warrant filed by US prosecutors for plotting to set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon and operating websites with instructions on how to make bombs. In May 2009, he was found guilty in a New York court of 11 charges, including providing material support to Al Qaeda and distributing information on explosives and weapons of mass destruction, and later sentenced to life in prison.

2009-ongoing: New York synagogue bomb plot

Four men were arrested in the Bronx in May 20, 2009 after allegedly plotting to detonate bombs near a synagogue, and to shoot Stinger surface-to-air missiles at Air National Guard aircraft at Stewart Airport in Newburgh, N.Y. Fake bombs and missiles were provided by a government informant. On June 2, 2009, James Cromitie, Onta Williams, David Williams, and Laguerre Payen were charged in an eight-count indictment, and are awaiting trial.

2010: Denver/NYC bomb plot

Denver resident Najibullah Zazi was arrested on September 20, 2009, on suspicion of associating with Al Qaeda and planning to carry out a terrorist attack in New York. Subsequently, his father, Mohammed Wali Zazi, and his imam Ahmad Wais Afzali were also arrested. Najibullah Zazi is currently in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn awaiting trial.

2010: Fourth suspect in East Africa American embassy bombings

Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian national, is scheduled to be tried in September 2010 for his alleged role in the US Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. US Attorney General Eric Holder has issued a letter directing the US attorney’s office not to seek the death penalty. Indicted on 286 charges, including conspiring with Al Qaeda, he was captured in Pakistan and detained at Guantánamo Bay. He was transferred in June 2009 to New York to stand trial.

This vote will FORCE those walking A-HOLES to debate. Then we’ll pass it and shove that thing so far down their throats all they’ll be able to do is SWALLOW.

Rural Poverty: 11 Myths and Realities

While poverty rates are highest in inner cities, only 23 percent of those in poverty live there. Overall, poverty rates in rural areas have been and continue to be consistently higher than those found in urban areas, which includes inner cities. In this case, rural areas have the second highest poverty rates of 16.3 percent when compared to urban areas (RSS Task Force 1993:32). In 1990, there were 9 million people in rural areas living in poverty; nearly one in five rural residents. In 1993, in the North Central region, the rural poverty rate stood at 13.6 percent, whereas the poverty rate for urban areas was only 11.4 percent.

Not only do rural areas have consistently higher rates of poverty than urban places, but those living in poverty in rural areas are more likely to be white and living in two-adult households. Rural areas also have higher rates of persistent poverty and they are dispersed over a larger geographic area. Still, compared to their urban counterparts, those living in poverty in rural areas are more likely to be working.

Last night, I put out a plea for Americans like you to email and call the four ‘moderate’ Senators most likely to affect the voting on the health care bill being forced on Saturday night, 11/21, by Dingy Harry Reid. Senators EVAN BAYH, MARY LANDRIEU, BILL NELSON and BLANCHE LINCOLN.

I’d like to thank ERIC ODOM for linking us to his many readers. I’d also like to thank the editor that drives this machine, Dee, who had to sort through the two thousand or so responses that came in to our appeal. Additionally, thousands more must have gone out that did not, or could not, take time to comment. To say that we were surprised, thankful and gratified would be an understatement. AMERICA is alive and well…God bless you all and KEEP UP THE HEAT!!

At this writing, it appears that Bill Nelson may be feeling bullet proof enough to vote in favor of the unhealthy America bill. Either that, or they have promised him the world to get him to betray his constituents and his country. Likewise, Mary Landrieu has been offered a 100 MILLION dollar pork sandwich. In her typically opportunistic and weather vane fashion, she may be unable…scratch that…unwilling to forego bestowing this largesse that belongs to OTHER Americans in her state, which already had BILLIONS of Federal dollars pumped into it, apparently accomplishing very little, other than greasing skids for bureaucrats and politicians. It’s business as usual in Louisiana.

It’s just possible that these Senators have been promised some cushy assignment in a ‘future’ Obama administration, or perhaps a lush job with a ‘K’ Street lobbying firm should an aroused electorate bounce their useless carcasses out of there. DON’T put anything past this bunch. It should be readily apparent that they no longer serve the interests of the United States of America, its Constitution or its people. They are on a purely Marxist ideological drive to fundamentally change America into something which AMERICANS don’t want, and which in point of fact is DIAMETRICALLY opposed to the will of the people.

I’ve known for a long time that Americans were outraged and getting more steamed by the minute…but after reading some of your comments…if I were one of those Senators, I’d be damned uncomfortable.

DON’T STOP NOW!! I hate to keep picking on him, but Mark Levin has asked his radio listeners to call, email and write these four and all members of the Senate as well. He has a huge audience. We shut down their phones today as their message boxes are full. Keep calling, emailing and writing those letters. Be courteous but be firm…it’s ok to tell them off but do it in a civil manner. Don’t kid yourself into thinking it’s not having an effect because it IS! A lot of these politicians are looking over their shoulders to see when the pitchfork mob will show up on the horizon…and DESERVEDLY SO.

Don’t listen to some of the supposed ‘conservative’ turncoats in the lame stream media, they are just somebody’s lapdog anyway, and chances are I’VE got a larger readership than most of those clowns.

Joe the Plumber Hits Media Coverage, Tells ‘E&P’ He Hopes Palin Does Not Run in 2012

...Regarding Palin, the former Republican vice presidential candidate now making her rounds across the country on a book tour, Wurzelbacher told E&P he hopes she is not a candidate for president in 2012.

“I hope she doesn’t (run) because I think she could do a lot for America outside of office,” Wurzelbacher said. “And I think she could rally Americans to get together and make some changes from the grassroots level. I think she could be an incredible rallying point, and I think that’s where she could serve America best.”

The two children chosen to front Richard Dawkins’s latest assault on God could not look more free of the misery he associates with religious baggage. With the slogan “Please don’t label me. Let me grow up and choose for myself”, the youngsters with broad grins seem to be the perfect advertisement for the new atheism being promoted by Professor Dawkins and the British Humanist Association.

Except that they are about as far from atheism as it is possible to be. The Times can reveal that Charlotte, 8, and Ollie, 7, are from one of the country’s most devout Christian families.

Their father, Brad Mason, is something of a celebrity within evangelical circles as the drummer for the popular Christian musician Noel Richards. Now a web designer and photographer, Mr Mason has been supplementing his income for years by providing photographs to agencies who sell them on to newspapers and advertising campaigns.

He said: “It is quite funny, because obviously they were searching for images of children that looked happy and free. They happened to choose children who are Christian. It is ironic. The humanists obviously did not know the background of these children.”

He said that the children’s Christianity had shone through. “Obviously there is something in their faces which is different. So they judged that they were happy and free without knowing that they are Christians. That is quite a compliment. I reckon it shows we have brought up our children in a good way and that they are happy.

Gerald Coates, the leader of the Pioneer network of churches, which Mr Mason and his family used to attend before they moved to Dorset, said: “I think it is hilarious that the happy and liberated children on the atheist poster are in fact Christian.”

Of course the British Humanist Campaign, like good political spin doctors say it doesn’t matter. They just object as does Dawkin’s to parents labeling their Children as Christians; that is, until they are mature enough to reject Christianity. Of course the truth is, the children they found to be the happiest looking for their ads looked that way because of the joy of the Lord in their hearts.

The problem is, while these Children will grow up to discover Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are myths, their inner knowledge of God rarely fades and even more rarely is rejected outright. The Bible tells us if we raise up Children to respect God, when they grow up they will not depart from Him.

Plus, who is Dawkin’s to tell parents they should not raise their children in their faith or to demand like some intolerant liberal that only morons believe in God and no intelligent human being ever would? Which tells innumerable scientists, even many of the greatest in world history that believed in God, they were all intellectually inferior to Dawkin’s and all of his God hating disciples.

Dawkin’s like any Communist is sure that belief in God is evil and must be stamped out for the human race to progress; and if he had the power, I suspect he would be just as bloodthirsty and ruthless in dealing with those damn Christians.

Postal Service to resume North Pole Santa letters

NCHORAGE, Alaska – Wide-eyed children around the world will be hearing from Santa’s “elves” at the North Pole after all.

During Christmas seasons for decades, these dedicated elves responded to thousands of letters addressed to “Santa Claus, North Pole.”

All that was ending with a U.S. Postal Service decision to discontinue the program based in the small Alaskan town amid privacy concerns.

The elves from Santa’s Mailbag vowed to fight the decision, while North Pole residents voiced outrage.

A reversal of the Postal Service move was announced Friday.

“We never wanted to spoil people’s Christmas,” said agency spokesman Ernie Swanson. “It was just a decision we had to make based on privacy concerns, and it is labor-intensive. But it’s still nice that we’re able to resume this and still make people’s holiday.”

In response to the Columbia Journalism Review’s accusing me of “blackmailing” the Attorney General of the United States, I must take notice that the mainstream media as a journalistic establishment IS paying attention to the ongoing ACORN scandal.  Good.  I thought so.

What the Columbia Journalism Review is doing is very similar to what Media Matters is doing: protecting the Democrat-Media Complex, the natural alliance of the Democratic Party and the mainstream media.  This ACORN investigation has been going on for two months and Hannah, James, and I have proven to be truth-tellers every step of the way, while the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now has been proven time and again to be liars.


Either Andrew has some explosive new tapes and real information to destroy ACORN, or he is the best bluffing, poker player anywhere.
I think the man has some very unsavory evidence and it leads to the top. Either way Breitbart has some stones!

When Al Cobo became mayor of Detroit in the 1950’s, he predicted - correctly - that he would be the last republican to hold that office, and that Detroit would fall under everlasting democrat control in the future. During his administration, Detroit had nearly 2 million residents and a booming auto industry.

Today, thanks to 60 years of greed and corruption under state and city democrat machine politics and union greed, the Motor City is a wasteland where even the dead have no dignity.

The abandoned corpses, in white body bags with number tags tied to each toe, lie one above the other on steel racks inside a giant freezer in Detroit’s central mortuary, like discarded shoes in the back of a wardrobe.

Some have lain here for years, but in recent months the number of unclaimed bodies has reached a record high. For in this city that once symbolised the American Dream many cannot even afford to bury their dead.

After years of gross mismanagement by the city’s leaders and the big three car manufacturers of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, who continued to make vehicles that Americans no longer wanted to buy, Detroit today has an unemployment rate of 28 per cent, higher even than the worst years of the Great Depression.

The murder rate is soaring. The school system is in receivership. The city treasury is $300 million (£182m) short of the funds needed to provide the most basic services such as rubbish collection. In its postwar heyday, when Detroit helped the US to dominate the world’s car market, it had 1.85 million people. Today, just over 900,000 remain. It was once America’s fourth-largest city. Today, it ranks eleventh, and will continue to fall.

Thousands of houses are abandoned, roofs ripped off, windows smashed. Block after block of shopping districts lie boarded up. Former manufacturing plants, such as the giant Fisher body plant that made Buicks and Cadillacs, but which was abandoned in 1991, are rotting.

Is it any wonder that Sarah Palin - whether she be a sound prospect for political office or not - attracted thousands to her book-signing in Grand Rapids, 200 miles west and light-years away from the squalor that symbolizes everything wrong with liberal democrat policy.
