So here we are in another Presidential election year, and yet again we are asked to choose between a candidate with no background of military service and one with military service. In 2004 John Kerry ran on his military service. He saluted the audience during his nomination acceptance speech at the Democrat national convention. He spoke of his band of swiftboat brothers, and both he and his surrogates lambasted President Bush for only having served this country as a lowly member of the Texas Air National Guard. They even tried to start a phony scandal over Bush not having completed that service.
To put it simply, military service was key to the Democrat strategy in the 2004 election. Which was a change from when Bob Dole, a decorated combat veteran, ran against Bill Clinton, a draft dodger, in 1996. During that election we were told that military service isn’t important for a President. But now that Barack Obama is the Democrat candidate - a man who hasn’t completed a single term in the Senate let alone a tour of duty in the military - when will the Democrats get around to telling us that military service suddenly doesn’t matter again?
Soon, I’d imagine, which would leave us with this summary of Democrat positions on military service:
1996: Military service doesn’t matter.
2004: Military service matters.
2008: Military service doesn’t matter.
