Dr. Shackleford at The Jawa Report is saying that McCain's his man for 2008, mostly because he thinks the Senator will get it right with the war on terror.
I think I could agree on that point. Senator McCain has been a stalwart supporter of the war in Iraq and the war on terror in general. Were we talking about the 2004 election again his strong points on terror might have been enough for me, but no we're talking about 2008 and I'm not going to be a single-issue voter any more.
McCain worries me. For one thing I am still ticked about campaign finance reform. What an abysmal folly that was. I am also worried about McCain's love affair with public opinion. Doing what the people want is all well and good up to a point, but one of the indications of true leadership is the ability to stick to your guns and do what you think is the right thing even in the face of stiff opposition. I have a feeling that McCain is going to do the things he feels will make him popular rather than the things he feels are right.
One thing I have always admired about President Bush is that while I don't agree with everything he has done he does stick, for the most part, to doing what he said he would do. He doesn't back away from what he feels is right even when his poll numbers are abysmal and it seems like he's being attacked from all sides.
I just don't think McCain has that.
McCain isn't a bad person or a bad politician, it is just that his constant pandering to the media is grating. I want someone who will lead with principle, not with public opinion polls.
I won't support McCain for the GOP nomination in 2008. If he gets the nomination I may or may not support him for President depending on who the other candidates are.
Voting McCain
