Back on May 11th USA Today reported on the covert existence of a calls database utilized by the NSA to track terrorist communications (another blow for our anti-terror operations, thanks guys!). In that article USA Today indicates that companies like Verizon and BellSouth provided call information to the NSA.

Now it turns out that USA Today is all wet in that regard.

Based on its reporting after the May 11 article, USA TODAY has now concluded that while the NSA has built a massive domestic calls record database involving the domestic call records of telecommunications companies, the newspaper cannot confirm that BellSouth or Verizon contracted with the NSA to provide bulk calling records to that database.

I expect lawsuits to be filed on behalf of Verizon and BellSouth any day now. USA Today's reckless reporting can clearly be said to have done some serious damange to the reputation of both companies, just as their reckless reporting in outing one of our intelligence community's covert anti-terror operations has done serious damange to our country's ability to prosecute the war on terror.

Too bad we citizens, who are now somewhat less safe thanks to this article, can't sue as well.
