There's a debate, of course, in Washington, D.C. about tax cutting, and I want the people of the 9th Congressional District and districts all across America to understand the difference in our record. Our party and members of the United States Congress stood squarely for tax relief for everybody who pays taxes.
And the Democratic Party has a clear record. In 2001, more than 90 percent of the congressional Democrats voted against cutting income tax rates. More than 90 percent of the Democrats voted against the bill that provided tax relief for married couples. More than 90 percent of the Democrats voted for* a bill that would have put the death tax on the road to extinction. More than 90 percent of the Democrats voted against a bill that doubled the child credit. More than 95 percent of the congressional Democrats voted against cutting taxes on capitol gains.
And recently, during the budget debate, Democrats used the occasion to call for $173 billion in tax hikes and fee increases. The difference is clear: if you want the government in your pocket, vote Democrat; if you want to keep more of your hard-earned money, vote Republican.
More of this please, Mr. President. And from Congressional Republicans it would be nice to see some spending discipline to go along with this dedication to tax cuts.
As for the Democrats, they really are amazing aren't they? They oppose tax cuts and they oppose spending cuts. Even an attempt by Congressional Republicans to reduce the growth in spending on certain government entitlement programs (Remember when they were all calling Dick Cheney "the Grinch" for casting the deciding vote in a tie to cut spending?) they Democrats scream and cry about injustice and lack of caring.
Republicans may not have done all that well fiscally in the last couple of years, but those Americans who are concerned with this country's fiscal issues they are still very much the lesser of two evils when compared with Democrats.
