I think most of us can agree that Iran is a threat that should be taken seriously by this country. They are in the process of developing nuclear technology, something that no amount of international diplomacy has been able to stop. While the timing of when Iran, at it’s current rate of development, could become nuclear threat to America and the rest of the world is somewhat in dispute, I think we can all agree that the Iran situation is one we shouldn’t be taking lightly. One in which we should have all options on the table, no?
Well apparently the Democrats don’t feel that way. They don’t seem to be taking the threat of a possibly nuclear Iran seriously and they are taking options off the table:
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) told the crowd: “The choice is bipartisanship or stalemate,” The Washington Post reported Sunday.
And she told lawmakers that “if it appears likely that Bush wants to take the country to war against Iran, the House would take up a bill to deny him the authority to do so,” the Post quoted Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly as saying.
Can you imagine what a comfort that statement is for the mad mullahs in Iran? Can you just picture the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, laughing at how he’s been able to threaten Israel with apocalypse and thumb his nose at the international community only to be rewarded with a Democrat promise to stop any U.S. military action against his country?
It’s disgusting. Heck, it’s frightening, especially given that the Dems aren’t making that promise out of concern for sound foreign policy but rather simply to undermine a President they hate.
Is military action against Iran warranted right now? Insofar as their meddling in Iraq needs to be stopped I think it is on a small scale. Should we declare outright war on Iran? I’m not sure that’s necessary at this point. But either way, it emboldens the Iranians to know that military action is off the table politically for America. The Democrats should keep their opposition to war with Iran in their pockets. For better or worse they are our elected leaders and should lead in the fashion they see fit, but they hurt our ability to deal with a nation like Iran when they so blatantly undermine our President.
They are, without a doubt, putting this nation in greater peril than it needs to be because of their petty political backbiting.
