One of my fears that others may share is what the Democrats will do with our national security in general and our military specifically if they again get control of the presidency and congress. Addressing that concern, Joseph Farah of WorldNetDaily reprises an article he wrote in 1998 on the decline of our military strength during the Clinton years. In Who Stripped Defense, he writes:

When the United States, and its allies, last took on Saddam Hussein's Iraq during the Persian Gulf War of 1991, the U.S. Army had 18 divisions. In the years since, that number has been reduced to 10. Of those remaining 10, three are permanently committed to the defense of South Korea and another is involved in "peacekeeping" in Bosnia.

The entire Defense Department budget has been reduced by one-third – not only cutting the numbers of combat personnel available for Round 2 of the showdown with Iraq, but their readiness as well, says an internal Senate memorandum on the state of the military. The report calls the preparedness problems "extremely serious."

Propheticlly, Round 2 of the showdown with Iraq has occurred along with military action in Afghanistan, both of which are not nearly ended. What seems certain considering the beligerence of Iran, Syria and other Islamic nations, there will also be a Round 3 and probably other rounds as well. How prepared our country will be to meet these further military needs is largely dependent on a congress and president that understands and acknowledges these future threats to our national security.

Considering that most Democrats have not even acknowledge the current Iraqi/Afghanistan conflicts as necessary to assure national security, I think that it is reasonable to assume that a Democrat congress - much less a Democrat president - would not be eager to preserve the current strength of our military.
