Take A Deep Breath

There's a lot of anger going around right now, mostly on the left, about how much money our government is giving for tsunami aid.

For instance, this Colin Powell statement"

"It's going to take a lot more," he said. "This is the time to make sure that we get a good needs assessment." The death toll there has reached more than 114,000.

"elicited this response from David at ISOU:

While we "assess needs," people are suffering Mr. Secretary.

I don't get the anger. We've already pledged $35 million with private donations likely doubling that number, though we won't probably ever have a very accurate accounting of those contributions. Now seems like the appropriate time to take a deep breath and start actually looking at what needs to be done instead of just throwing money at the situation.

And I, for one, am glad that our government is going to be cautious and accountable with the money spent on this situation given the fact that the area where we are sending the money is crawling with characters like this one.

I'd rather our charity dollars not find their way into his pockets.
