Spoons:

It's time for conservatives to give up their knee-jerk opposition to a single, unified method of identification for all American citizens and legal residents. Yes, there are drawbacks. Of course, there's potential for abuse. However, a National ID card would be invaluable in the War on Terror, it would be the single greatest tool we've ever had to fight illegal immigration, we'd be able to keep track of criminal records of illegals -- many of whom now use numerous variations of their complicated names (e.g. Jose Maria Vasquez Guadalupe de la Cruz, aka Jose Vasquez, aka Jose Guadalupe, aka Jose de la Cruz) to hide portions of their criminal records. A national ID would not require us to give up any essential liberties, but it would reap significatn security benefits.

LaMarr Alexander is now on board.

I agree, for all the same reasons.
