David Wells started off shaky but finished strong last night against the Orioles. Unfortunately the slow start cost him his 200th win. He pitched a complete game, the 42nd of his career, giving up 5 runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking none.
The Yankees hit well, collecting 11 hits on the game, but couldn't put together enough runs to give Wells the win. Soriano stayed hot going 2-4 on the night. Giambi, Posada and Matsui also hit well, all going 2-4, with Giambi hitting a double and Matsui getting his 104th RBI. The only other bright spot was Juan Rivera's 2-run homer in the seventh. He ended up 1-4 on the night.
The Yankees will again face Baltimore tomorrow with Mussina on the mound. Mussina will also be going for his 200th win. Lets hope he fairs better than Wells did.
The Red Sox also lost last night, and did so in spectacular fashion. How does the best-hitting team in baseball get shutout by the Devilrays? The
curse of the bambino, that's how.
