After reading this post about the appalling culture of crime down in New Orleans by resident (and law enforcement officer) Pilgrim, I had to share a couple of interesting crime and law enforcement developments from my hometown.

Recently our local police department released crime stats for my hometown.  They were pretty much on par with crime levels for the past decade.  No murders.  No negligent homicide.  Almost no violent crimes to speak of at all with the exception of a small number of rapes, and a spate of robberies that were all committed by one group of people who are now in jail.  To put it simply, major crimes pretty much don’t happen in Minot.

About the same time these crime numbers were released it was announced that our police department had gotten a $29,430 grant from the federal government to fight violent gun crime.  How did our awesome police department choose to spend it?  Gun education classes for citizens to teach them how to better handle and care for their privately-owned weapons.

To say that I am satisfied with the job our local cops are doing is an understatement.  Not only are they effectively fighting major crimes, but they also recognize and cooperate with a private citizen’s right to bear arms and defend himself/herself.
