Newly-elected French President Nicholas Sarkozy (who has become something of an American favorite after his rousing speech before the US Congress) has announced his intention to marry girlfriend Carla Bruni:

Wow.

One wonders if the French media will follow the lead of the prudish American press corps and label Ms. Bruni a “trophy wife” as they did Jeri Thompson?  Probably not, but then Bruni probably wouldn’t go over well here in America at all as far as political wives go.  She’s dated both Donald Trump and Mick Jagger (breaking up the former’s marriage), and has expressed a preference for polygamy over monogamy saying “I’m monogamous from time to time, but I prefer polygamy and polyandry.”

I think Sarkozy will have his hands full with this one.
