John Hawkins at Right Wing News has a poll of “right of center bloggers” up today regarding the GOP’s chances in the upcoming elections. Here are the key results:
1) Do you think the GOP is going to retain control of the House?
Yes (38)—61.3%
No (24)—38.7%2) Do you think the GOP is going to retain control of the Senate?
Yes (56)—90.3%
No (6)—9.7%
Granted, the group polled here wasn’t exactly ideologically diverse, but the level of confidence on display here was still somewhat surprising. It matches up with an opinion I’ve had for the last several weeks. Namely, that the GOP will lose ground in both houses of Congress but won’t lose a majority in either. There are a couple of reasons why I feel that way.
First, I think the media is, largely, in the bag for the Democrats. The articles they run are overwhelmingly slanted toward the Democrats, and the polls we hear about endlessly routinely oversample self-described liberals/Democrats.
Second, while the Republicans have certainly done what they can to lose this election (corruption, spending too much money, lackluster performance on border security, etc.) I just don’t see that many Americans out there who will be willing to exchange the Republicans in for a bunch of Democrats who aren’t any less corrupt, will spend even more money than the Republicans have and will likely do what they can to make our southern border less secure.
All while trying impeach the President and choke off funding for the war in Iraq so that we lose there like we lost in Vietnam, naturally.
Call me crazy, but I think there’s going to be a lot of Democrats in this country having Pauline Kael moments come November 8th.
