Not that the media is going to make much of a big deal about it. The war is only news when we’re losing, not when we’re coming home in victory.
Under the Pentagon recommendations, one combat brigade - numbering between 3,500 to 4,000 troops - will leave Iraq after the first of the year and will not be replaced. In addition, at least one Marine battalion will leave and not be replaced, as well as a few thousand support forces, defense officials said.
This represents approximately 8,000 troops coming home and with them a similar number of support personnel. Meaning roughly 16,000 (give or take) out of Iraq.
That’s in addition to surge troops who were withdrawn from Iraq a while ago and never replaced with new personnel.
This is happening per the recommendation of General David Petraeus.
Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, delivered his recommendations to military leaders about two weeks ago. He had initially argued to maintain the current force levels in Iraq - about 146,000 troops, including 15 combat brigades and thousands of support forces - through June, according to defense officials.
What will the reaction be from Democrats (including Barack Obama) who declared Iraq a lost war over a year ago?
I imagine they’ll be studiously ignoring the issue. And their allies in the media will no doubt let them do it.
