Andy Pettitte pitched seven great innings in the Yankees 7-1 win over the Devil Rays last night. He only allowed one run on eight hits on his way to striking out nine.
The Yankees got on the board early with Nick Johnson scoring on Giambi's single. Johnson had grounded into a fielder's choice and then was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeter. A wild pitch then moved Johnson to third.
Tampa Bay kept the score close in the second inning with Piatt hitting a double and subsequently scoring on a Crawford single to center. That would be it for the Devil Rays offense, however.
The score remained tied until the Yankees broke it open in the sixth inning. Jeter started out the inning with a single to center field. Posada then doubled to right field bringing Jeter home. Bernie Williams followed up with a double of his own scoring Posada.
The Yankees then piled on four more runs in the eight inning. Jeter was put on base after being hit by a pitch and was then brought home when Posada hit a first pitch home run. Bernie Williams then got on base having also been hit by a pitch and was soon moved to second by a single from Matsui. Boone loaded the bases with a single of his own. Williams and Matsui were finally scored when Alfonso Soriano hit a double to center field to follow up on Ruben Sierra's pinch-hit, infield fly in place of Karim Garcia.
It seems like Sierra is hot every time he starts with a new team then becomes an offensive black hole. I really wish he was not on this team.
Jeff Nelson and Chris Hammond came in to relieve Pettitte for the 8th and 9th innings, respectively.
