Ohio Republicans Looking To Pass Law Giving Fathers A Say In Abortions

It’s about time someone corrected this inequality.

Several Ohio state representatives who normally take an anti-abortion stance are now pushing pro-choice legislation - sort of.

Led by Rep. John Adams, a group of state legislators have submitted a bill that would give fathers of unborn children a final say in whether or not an abortion can take place.

It’s a measure that, supporters say, would finally give fathers a choice.

“This is important because there are always two parents and fathers should have a say in the birth or the destruction of that child,” said Adams, a Republican from Sidney. “I didn’t bring it up to draw attention to myself or to be controversial. In most cases, when a child is born the father has financial responsibility for that child, so he should have a say.”

If we’re going to maintain that killing unborn children is a constitutional right (it isn’t, but whatever), and if we’re going to force fathers to be fiscally responsible for the children if they’re born, then doesn’t it follow that the father has an interest in whether or not the child gets aborted?  I mean, sure the woman has to deal with the pregnancy, but that lasts nine months.  The father is on the hook for child support for 18 years under laws so draconian that he has to pay every single month, regardless of what personal disasters befall him, lest he lose his driving privileges, be publicly shamed as a “deadbeat dad” or put in jail (depending on what state he happens to be paying child support in).

Personally, I’d just as soon abortion be illegal so that both the mother and the father are forced to either give the child up for adoption or face the consequences of their actions, but if we’re going to let these unborn children be killed in order to spare them that we should at least recognize that the father has every bit as much interest in the decision as the mother.
