The Yankees offense finally took off tonight, whooping the woeful Tigers.15-5. Nickey Johnson had a good night, though he made three errors at first base, which is truly unusual for him. Even with the errors I have a feeling that Nickey will be playing in the Bronx for a long, long time.
Chop-Suey also hit a homer and drove in three runs. I hear the people complaining that he shouldn't get Rookie of the Year honors due to the fact that he is technically a "veteran" from the Japanese League. In my humble opinion, the Japanese League has a talent level somewhere between AAA and the Majors...so score them a AAAA team. Keeping that in mind, remember that AAA players are also paid professionals and it becomes difficult to find many MLB players since John Olerud who weren't paid professionals before before becoming "rookies" in the majors.
Pettitte pitched well tonight. His first two innings were solid, but he was hit pretty hard in the third inning with the Tigers scoring 4 runs. He settled back down and cruised until the sixth inning when he was replaced with Chris Hammond.
By the time the 8th inning arrived Posada managed to bump the game up from a blow-out to a joke. He hit a grand slam bringing his RBI total for the game up to 7. After that the Tigers completely fell apart with 3 errors on three consecutive batted balls.
It was nice the see the Yankees finally hit the ball around. They need to keep it up to cruise into the playoffs hitting on all cylinders. I would, however, feel a lot better if Giambi would start to hit.
