This is actually a good comment, but not for the reason Sen. Obama thinks:
“Why is it the war on terrorism seems to be fought between September and November every even-numbered year?” Obama, the son of a Kenyan immigrant, said on the campus of the predominantly black private college.
For a Democrat, it probably does appear as though fighting the war on terror is only something to be done between September and November on election years. That’s about the only time Democrats are ever really willing to even pretend like they’ve got something to offer on the issue.
Consider this:
- Democrats oppose fighting the war on terror in Iraq.
- Democrats oppose tactics like waterboarding to gather intelligence in the war on terror.
- Democrats oppose the SWIFT terror finance tracking program.
- Democrats oppose the NSA’s monitoring of calls between people in America and international terrorist contacts.
- Democrats oppose the President/Republican’s system of military tribunals for detaining terrorists and bringing them to justice.
Now, Democrats will be quick to point out that they’re not against fighting the terrorists, but you have to ask yourself how, given all they oppose, they would fight the war on terror. Because I’m convinced that they wouldn’t. They’d pull our military out of the middle east. They’d stop the most effective anti-terror intelligence gathering. They’d treat terrorism like a police matter, and would rely on simply investigating and prosecuting terrorists after they’ve already committed their crimes rather than trying to stop those attacks from happening in the first place.
Obama, unwittingly I’m sure, hit exactly what the difference is between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to the war on terror. Democrats see the war on terror as a campaign issue. Republicans see it as something that is necessary to keep this country safe.
