The North Dakota Legislature voted Monday to ban abortion in the state if courts rule that such a move would be constitutional.
Under the bill, the only abortions allowed would be those to protect the life of the mother or in cases or rape and incest.
Christopher Dodson, executive director of the North Dakota Catholic Conference, called the bill “an important step.”
“It furthers the culture of life so that we don’t turn our back on unborn children or the women who carry them,” he said.
I don’t like the exceptions for rape and incest. I know they’re necessary to get this sort of legislation passed because the politicians have to neutralize the dumb “ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE SOME GIRL HAVE HER RAPIST’S CHILD!!!” argument from the pro-abortion zealots, but for those who believe that abortion is wrong and immoral and recognize that life begins at conception you just can’t recognize rape or incest as good enough reasons to kill an unborn child. They certainly aren’t crimes the child has committed, so why should he or she die for them? He/she shouldn’t, just as he/she shouldn’t die just because the mother decides she doesn’t want a child.
Anyway, the far-left liberal Democrats in the state were angry:
Sen. Tracy Potter, D-Bismarck, called it “terribly embarrassing.”
“I believe this makes it look like North Dakota doesn’t respect women’s rights,” he said.
Of course, it also makes the state look like we don’t respect people who murder their unborn children as a form of birth control, so there’s that.
Personally, I prefer our state respecting the right to life of unborn children than any imaginary “right” of a woman to murder her children before they emerge from the womb.
