Yesterday in an article about North Dakota’s stand your ground bill (which I posted about here) Rep. Al Karlson, who is the legislation’s sponsor, was quoted as saying that he’d shoot down any intruders into his home. Here’s the quote from the article:
Rep. Al Carlson, R-Fargo, said homeowners should not be obliged to try to find out whether a burglar is a potential danger before they defend themselves.
“I’d tell you what would happen in my house. I would shoot that person, and I would shoot them enough times that I knew he wasn’t going to do any danger to me, or my family,” Carlson said. “He’d leak like a watering can when I was done with him.”
For that he was mocked by North Dakota Democrats on their official blog:
Now that’s some Republican rationality.
Am I the only one completely unsurprised that a bunch of liberals would believe that defending one’s home is somehow irrational? That using force to stop someone who has broken into your home doesn’t make sense? That recognizing that a homeowner has no duty to make a target out of himself/herself by first asking an illegal intruder what he/she is doing?
It is not fitting that liberals would feel this way? They have no respect for the 2nd amendment and our right to bear arms. On the national level they do nothing but undercut our military by endlessly pushing to cut defense funding. They can’t even manage enough respect for our fighting men and women in Iraq to send them reinforcements while they’re on the battlefield fighting a war the Democrats won’t oppose (at least not directly by de-authorizing it). They expect our troops to fight and die for a war the Democrats have no intention of winning.
So I guess I’m not surprised at all that a bunch of liberal pansies would want us to engage in diplomacy with those who break into our houses before we can use force to stop them. That said diplomacy might get us shot for our efforts is apparently a risk they’re willing to take.
