I’ve received word that the principle sponsors of measure 2 on the ballot in the past election (the 50% cut in state income taxes for individuals), Americans for Prosperity, are pulling out of the state.
I’ve heard that they’re pulling out of eight other states as well.
Why is this happening? It’s hard to say, but with a Republican establishment in North Dakota that seems openly hostile to supply-side economics it could just be that they’re heading off to friendlier climes until things in North Dakota begin to change.
This will no doubt have leftists in North Dakota, whether they be Democrats or Republicans, snickering into their sleeves but I don’t think the cause of fiscal conservatism is dead in the state. Other groups will emerge to take up the banner, and after this next session when North Dakotans will inevitably be shafted again when it comes to tax relief I’m willing to guess that the public will be a lot more receptive to the message.
