Though, really, Brent Edison's idea of "tax cuts" are sort of funny:
The Democratic-NPL candidate for tax commissioner said state government should give taxpayers a half-billion dollars in tax relief over the next four years.
Brent Edison says he would do this through property tax roll-backs, more state funds for education, expanded homestead tax credits and a halt in double-digit tuition increases.
Leave it to a liberal Democrat to think that more government spending constitutes giving tax payers their money back.
I'd like to see most of North Dakota's surplus go back to the taxpayers. I think the responsible thing for our leaders to do is to double the size of the state's "rainy day" fund from $100 million to $200 million and then give the rest of the surplus back to North Dakotans in the form of a tax cut.
Will the state's Republicans do this? I can only hope that they will, but as is often the case the temptation to spend this windfall may be too much for these politicians to handle.
