Why would Hollywood release a controversial feature film about alleged Mormon terrorists of 150 years ago while all but ignoring the dangerous Muslim terrorists of today?
The movie industry has pointedly avoided harsh treatment of modern Islamic radicals, but September Dawn (to be released nationally Aug. 24) portrays the 19th century Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a deeply corrupt cult led by an all-powerful, blood-thirsty mass murderer.
Hollywood does this for the same reason why the new Rambo movie has one of America’s fictional military icons fighting not the Islamic extremists who attacked us on 9/11 and with whom our real military is current engaged with in the middle east but rather...the Burmese. It’s because movies about Islamic terrorists might give people the idea that Islamic terrorism is actually a threat. And that would almost be like voting for George W. Bush or something.
But a hatchet piece on the early practitioners of a nearly all-white American religion which also just happens to be the religion of a Republican presidential front-runner? That’s golden baby.
Golden.
