You know what's grating? All this liberal gloating about the President's/Republicans low poll numbers of late.

What these people don't get is that while many Americans (myself included) are fed up with the Republicans and the way they've conducted themselves in office it doesn't mean that we're embracing liberalism. Far from it.

Let me summarize things for you:

It is a fact that Republicans control the White House, the House, the Senate, the majority of the state governorships and the majority of the state legislatures. It is also a fact that the vast majority of Republican politicians who hold office right now campaigned, and were elected, as conservatives. Finally, it is a fact that a lot of these politicians (at least at the federal level) have abandoned the conservative ideals of limited government and fiscal responsibility since getting into office.

So what do we conclude from this series of events? That Americans are rejecting conservatism and embracing liberalism?

Hardly.

Americans are fed up with Republicans because they haven't been acting like the conservatives they elected. Democrats are reaping the benefits of this frustration because, in our two party system, when people are ticked off at one party they tend to default to the other.

The key to Republicans staying in power is for them to re-embrace the conservative principles that put them in power in the first place. Acting like a bunch of liberals is a sure way to see the real liberals get back into power.
