Iraqis Silent About Abu Ghraib

Polls about the Abu Ghraib situation haven't gotten much of a response from Iraqis.

From the L.A. Times:

Amid the angry condemnations across America, Europe and much of the Arab world over the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal, Iraqi voices have been, by and large, muted.

But the generally subdued response among mainstream Iraqis is a harsh indictment in its own right, Iraqi pollsters and outside experts say. To many Iraqis, the abuse of prisoners came as no surprise. To hear them tell it, the experience of the American occupation was already one of degradation, disappointment and discomfort, and despite months of steady complaints, few U.S. officials seemed to listen.

Why does a subdued response have to indicate that Iraqi's are neccessarily angry with U.S. forces? Couldn't it be that Iraqis are perhaps more worried about other issues right now? Like finally ridding their country of extremists? Or what they're going to do with Saddam Hussein? Or getting schools set up? Getting water and electricity running?

Maybe Iraqis don't really care as much about an isolated incident of abuse in one prison by a small group of soldiers as the L.A. Times thinks they should.
