May 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption.
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage. And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.
The 55 mile per hour didn't make our energy situation better as much as it made insurance company's bottom lines better. That's because the insurance companies were able to jack up the insurance rates on everyone who received tickets for driving a reasonable speed on a safe highway.
So why is Hillary out there shilling for the insurance lobby. Well it turns out that she's the number one recipient of money from the insurance industry.
