The Iraqi constitution is well on its way to being complete and will be a victory for democracy in Iraq when its completed. A translated copy of a draft is available now on the internet. Its too bad that the visceral dislike of Jews harbored by most Arabs has found its way into that historic document.

Here are provisions three and four of article one in that document:

3. Any individual with another nationality (except for Israel) may obtain Iraqi nationality after a period of residency inside the borders of Iraq of not less than ten years for an Arab or twenty years for any other nationality, as long as he has good character and behavior, and has no criminal judgment against him from the Iraqi authorities during the time of his residency on the territory of the Iraqi republic.

4. An Iraqi may have more than one nationality as long as the nationality is not Israeli.

That's just too bad. If the Iraqi's could set aside their racial biases I believe they'd find that Israel would be a staunch ally in the region for democracy and against terrorism.

Keep in mind that the draft copy of the constitution linked above is very much a draft. And its been translated. This language may not make it to the final draft.

Lets hope that is the case.
