New Gingrich was given a rousing reception at the CPAC conference, and the "will he run for President?" rumors continue to fly.
Frankly, I hope he doesn't run for the GOP nomination. And if he does I hope he doesn't get it. He is a first-rate conservative thinker and what he did to lead Republicans back into power in the 1990's was brilliant, but he isn't fit to be President or to run for that office.
For one thing, he's unelectable. He's one of those "right-wing boogeymen" for the left. He has been so thoroughly derided by the left that name recognition alone will do him in amongst moderate voters. "Oh, New Gingrich," theyll say. "We know all about him."
Plus, he has made some truly atrocious decisions in his personal life that are sure to eclipse any campaign for the Presidency.
For another thing, his record as Speaker of the House is somewhat sketchy. He came into power with plenty of vim and vigor, but after his first year in office he, well...flopped.
The GOP has better options available for the Presidential nod. I think Newt would be great in cabinet position or as an adviser, but he doesn't has a shot as the candidate.
