TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - At least one member of the Florida Hispanic Legislative Caucus has demanded a public apology over an e-mail that a fellow Republican lawmaker thought was a funny way to remind people to pay their taxes.

Rep. Don Brown, R-DeFuniak Springs, recently forwarded a cartoon from his state e-mail account to his colleagues that read: “Don’t forget to pay your taxes ... 12 million illegal aliens are depending on you!”

Brown said Friday he meant the message as a joke, but it was met with a fierce reaction from many other lawmakers. He later sent a follow-up e-mail to apologize.

I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.  There’s no disputing the fact that illegal immigrants are a terrible burden on the taxpayers.  They use our hospitals without health insurance and then don’t pay their bills.  They send their kids to our schools while they don’t pay the property taxes, etc. that fund the schools.  And on and on.

The only thing worth getting upset about here is that Brown forwarded this as a joke.  There’s nothing funny about 12 million illegal immigrants sucking this country dry.

But it turns out the insinuation that illegal immigrants are a drag on tax payers isn’t what had the pointy-heads upset.  It was the fact that the illegal immigrants were called illegal immigrants.

Brown still needs to make a public apology, said Rep. Juan Carlos “J.C.” Planas, a Miami Republican and member of the Hispanic caucus.

“I think he has to specifically state that he understands now that that term, illegal alien, is extremely insulting to many individuals, and I think there has to be something a little bit more public and a little bit more contrite in his apology,” Planas said.

Illegal immigrants are people who have immigrated to this country and in the process violated our border/immigration laws.  That makes them, literally, illegal immigrants.

I know the PC goon squads want us to call them “undocumented migrants” or some such nonsense, but that’s just idiocy at work.  A crook is a crook, a thief is a thief and an illegal immigrant is an illegal immigrant.
