According to OpenSecrets.org, Tom Daschle has raised $13,516,502 for his re-election efforts against John Thune.

Note that South Dakota has a population of 754,844 as of the 2000 census.

By my calculations, Tom Daschle has raised $17.61 per citizen of South Dakota. He's also raised approximately twice as much as his opponent.

And still he's losing to John Thune in the Senate race.

Maybe he would have been better off just mailing twenty bucks to each and every citizen of South Dakota instead of running a campaign.
