President Bush is pushing a proposal on the Senate floor this week that would create a guest worker program allowing new immigrants into the country.
Many Senate Democrats support it. But Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad say they oppose it.
The bill could expand guest-worker programs for hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year. Bush says they`ll work jobs that Americans will not perform.
Dorgan says he believes it would diminish wages for all Americans. He`s filed an amendment to strike the provision allowing additional workers into the United States.
Conrad says he`ll support Dorgan`s amendment. He says the first thing the nation needs to do is secure its borders.
I don't say this often, but I couldn't agree with Senator Conrad more.
No illegal immigration reform will be worth the paper it is written on if we do not stem the tide of the million or so illegals who wander across our southern border every year.
