NAPLES, Florida (AP) -- If Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan has his way, a new town being built in Florida will be governed according to strict Roman Catholic principles, with no place to get an abortion, pornography or birth control.
The pizza magnate is bankrolling the project with at least $250 million and calls it "God's will."
Civil libertarians say the plan is unconstitutional and are threatening to sue.
Wait a minute...libertarians are against this? Isn't that a little hypocritical? I mean, libertarianism means believing people should be free to live how they want right? So if some rich guy wants to build his own community on his own land and dictate the sorts of things that can go on in that community...isn't that his business?
It is his land. The people who will live and work there will be doing so voluntarily. A true libertarian, I would think, would respect the rights of these individuals and wouldn't petition the government to intercede in the private lives of these citizens. These "libertarians" sound more like busy-body liberals. The sort who claim to respect individual choices but are really all about making everybody conform to their view of the world.
I certainly don't have a problem with what they're doing. I don't believe as they do, but then I don't plan on trying to move into their community.
