In France politicians have attempted to get passed a law that would allow businesses to fire workers when they don't perform up to snuff or the workers are no longer needed. As common sense as that measure sounds to those of us working in a free labor market here in America, it was met with weeks of violent protest in France from youths who can't imagine being fired for not doing what their bosses tell them to do.

Today President Chirac has decided to give into the protesters. Businesses will still be prevented from firing young workers who aren't performing well or aren't needed, and as a result the unemployment rate in that country will remain sky-high for young workers as businesses avoid hiring them.

I can only hope that this sort of socialist attitude remains in France and never makes it over here to America. Though I am sure that labor unions would love to negotiate deals that would prevent businesses from firing workers just like those in place in France.
