It would seem as though this tax rebate idea being floated by Bush administration was tried once before...by George McGovern.
Which doesn’t surprise me. This tax rebate isn’t tax relief, it’s just a check from the government and any economic stimulus it provides is going to be short-lived. After all, how much will difference will $800 make in your life during the course of a year? Some, I’m sure, and that’s great. But once that money is spent, it’s spent.
If we really want long-term economic stimulus we need to cut tax rates across the board. Instead of giving people some money back let’s lighten the tax load they carry every year, year after year.
That would have a significant economic impact. As significant as Bush’s tax cuts at the beginning of his administration were.
I really hope the President gets behind some real tax relief at the end of his administration lest tax policy serve as a metaphor for his entire term in office: In like a lion (tax cuts), out like a lamb (tax rebates).
