More of this please, Mr. President.
My favorite part? When he says that he can send in a troop surge to Iraq regardless of what Congress thinks of it. Which he’s right about, of course, unless Congress decides to de-authorize or modify their authorization for war in Iraq, something that the Democrats haven’t even hinted at so far. Of course, they’d have to get any modifications to the AUMF past a Republican filibuster, so that option is all but off the table.
The only other option left to them would be to de-fund the war, which would have the consequence of them having to explain to the American people why they’re denying our troops funds to complete their mission even as they’re fighting and dying on the battlefield. Which doesn’t mean that the Democrats won’t try to do it obliquely anyway seeing as how Iraq, to them, is more of a political weapon to be used against President Bush than a war to be won.
