Bureaucrat Answer To Long Waits: Ban Time!

Apparently Indiana is having a problem with long wait times at its Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices. Now most reasonable people would probably approach a problem like this by reviewing the process most citizens go through at the BMV and seeing if there are areas where efficiency can be increased. Maybe the BMV offices need newer, faster computers. Maybe the offices need more staff available to handle requests. Whatever.

One thing most reasonable people probably wouldn't do is ban the use of clocks in DMV offices so that citizens in line can't tell how long they've been waiting.

BMV spokesman Greg Cook had the ill-fated task of fielding my questions on the no-clocks rule. After talking to higher-ups, he called back with a few talking points. The rule, he said, is doubly beneficial. First, it makes sure workers are not fixated on quitting time. Second, it helps manage "the customer's perception of the (BMV) experience."

No clocks, no long waits. Is it really that simple?

Of course not. This is silly. A problem hidden is still a problem. And the lack of clocks won't ease the annoyance of waiting in long lines for license plates.

Do they think that people don't own watches?
