Are Suicide Attacks Ever Warranted?

A while back I had a discussion with someone about the ongoing strife in Israel. During that conversation I condemned suicide attacks as the cowardly tactics of a desperate enemy. The person I was discussing this with had a different outlook on the situation. He asked me if I thought suicide attacks would be ok if they were done in the struggle for freedom.

Now, don't get me wrong, I certainly do not side with the Palestinians but his question intrigued me. Are there any circumstances in which suicide bombings are warranted?

Let me pose a "for instance" for you. What if America was taken over by the second coming of Saddam Hussein? What if that dictator abolished the constitution and forced us all to work in factories. Would American rebels struggling against the cruel forces of that dictator be warranted in launching suicide attacks against his forces?

Any thoughts?
