An Obama Baby Boom?

In perhaps the most egregious example of media fawning yet, Newsweek suggests that there may be a baby boom resulting from people who got busy in the warm, cozy glow of all that hope ‘n change Obama’s election has brought us.

Anecdotal evidence abounds (Newsweek has been shopping around for anecdotes from couples who may have conceived at the dawn of the age of Obama), but the truth is that statistically there isn’t likely to be an Obama bump in birth numbers at all:

In order for an Obama baby boom to come to fruition, the sex craze will have to last a while. In August of 2007, the last year for which August birth records are available, Americans bore some 390,000 babies. In demographic terms, to achieve even a tiny boom, the number of babies conceived this month will need to exceed that figure. “So the question,” says Florida State University demographer Woody Carlson, “is whether or not this catches on. If it’s just a moment of excitement and then everybody goes back to being depressed, then we may see a tiny birth spike.

Unless you’re one of those people who think that Obama’s going to magically pay off your mortgage and fill your gas tank, now is no time to be having children.  With Obama promising massive new taxes on productivity, income and returns on investment - policies that are likely to cause our national economy to stall and stagnate - adding the additional cost of children to the mix isn’t a safe move at all.

Of course, I think the goal of Obama and his disciples may be to manufacture tough economic times (all the better to herd more citizens onto the government entitlement plantation), so maybe that’s the point.  Have lots and lots of kids.  The One will take care of you.
