UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Ten years after a landmark U.N. conference adopted a platform aimed at global equality for women, the United States is demanding that a declaration issued by a follow-up meeting make clear the women are not guaranteed a right to abortion.
Many pro-abortion activists no doubt feel that abortion is a right and that the act of having an abortion is merely a woman exerting control over her reproductive system. Unfortunately, this is not the correct way of looking at the situation.
If a woman wants to control her reproductive system she must exert that control earlier in the process, before there is another life involved. If a woman does not want to become a mother (and if a man does not want to become a father) they should refrain from sexual activities. Period. At the very least they should use contraceptives to avoid an unwanted outcome, but they still must accept the fact that these contraceptives are not 100% effective and be willing to accept the consequences of their decision to copulate.
And really, if we're talking about rights, what of a father's rights concerning his unborn child (not to mention the unborn child's right to live)? This argument is often met with a "its the woman's body" response, but really the place where the unborn child resides before being born is irrelevant. The unborn child is not the sole property of the mother any more than it is the sole property of the father. Were babies born from test tubes instead of mothers I'm sure we could all recognize this dual possession.
Instead we have allowed the unfounded idea that a woman somehow has the "right" to end the life of her and her partner's unborn child cloud the issue.
Abortion Is Not A Right
I hope the United States is successful in this endeavor.
