DAVENPORT, Iowa - Vice President Dick Cheney, who acknowledged last week that Iraq had produced no weapons of mass destruction after 1991, said Tuesday that under Saddam Hussein the country likely could have served as a source of weapons for terrorists.
"The situation we faced was Saddam Hussein and Iraq presented the most likely place where there could be a nexus between the terrorists on the one hand and weapons of mass destruction," Cheney said.
The support from Iraq to the terrorists we've been fighting in Afghanistan wouldn't have even had to be as significant as WMD's. Saddam could have hindered America greatly in Afghanistan by simply sending things like ammunition, guns and medical supplies to the forces fighting Americans. He could very well have sponsored an insurgency in Afghanistan much like the one we've seen in Iraq (one that is likely being sponsored by Iran).
Taking Saddam Hussein out was the right decision. If we had left him in power the success we've had in Afghanistan (as well as any future successes we hope to have in that region) would have been much less likely.
