This line of self-destructive reasoning is not unlike suggesting that a sick person be allowed to become fatally ill, and then we’ll try a remedy.
It is a line of reasoning that puts one’s narrow philosophical interests above the welfare of the nation. If I can’t have the candidate of my choice, then I’ll gladly see the country tank. That’ll show ‘em!
It’s a line of reasoning which overlooks a simple truth: The election of Brack Obama and the swelling of the democratic majority in congress - perhaps to veto-proof levels - will usher in a transformation of this country in 48 months which may be difficult if not impossible to undo.
Thank God there are millions and millions of republicans, independents and distressed democrats who do not share this burn-the-place-down mentality.

Pparets:
You are right about the potential for widespread and deep changes in the country under Obama and a veto proof Congress, it can spell absolute disaster for this nation and take decades to undo, if it can be undone at all.
The Republicans have brought this disaster and its potential consequences upon ourselves. We were a great minority party that simply did not have the courage to rule according to the great Conservative Principles that gave us power in Washington in the first place.
I have heard it suggested that the Republicans need to hold an emergency conference by this Memorial Day to plot out a strategy to keep this election cycle from being a terrible catastrophe for the party, and a true landslide victory for the forces of socialism.
Lastly, I understand Rob’s frustration and in other times I might agree that only defeat could heal a party drifting Left and into oblivion; unfortunately at this time in our history it might mean the Republicans never return to power at all. Even if they do, will they have learned their lessons and returned to Conservative principles or just become a RINO Party in order to ‘say’ they are in power?

pparets has it exactly right! There are any number of significant issues on which thoughtful conservatives can argue vehemently with John McCain. Immigration and global warming are but two of them. But there is no reason to believe that appeasement of our enemies or surrender in the face of bullying would play an y part in McCain’s agenda, as they clearly would in an Obama administration.
On the domestic economic front, McCain is committed to supply side tax cuts and policies that foster economic growth. His opponent is wrongly advocating raising taxes and more government interference with the economy.
The third and final major issue in my view is judicial appointments. At least two Supreme Court Justices have been ill, and are clearly awaiting the November election results before resigning. There may be as many as two more appointments before the end of the next president’s (first?) term. We may not get a Janice Rogers Brown or Priscilla Owens nomination from a President McCain, but do we really want another Ruth Bader Ginsberg? Or two? Or three? It is certainly possible that with the election of Barack Obama the Republicans could also loose the ability to filibuster in the Senate. There will be a lot of federal District Court and Appellate Court judgeships to be filled in the next four years as well. Do we really want the ACLU and MoveOn.org passing judgment on those appointments under an Obama administration?
Conservatives may have a lot to complain about under a McCain presidency. But we will have nothing at all to approve of under Obama. And the damage done may very well be irreparable. To our economy, to our ability to trade freely throughout the world, to our judiciary and the rule of law, and finally to our very freedoms.

Neiman: Dear friend, with all due respect I don’t give a rat’s ass any more about republicans, conservatives or Rob’s frustration. We’re not kids arguing over the rules for a game of streetball.
We cannot, we must not, stand by and allow Barack Obama and the libs to win without a fight. We do nothing on this blog except whine about what a RINO McCain is and pine for Fred Thompson… who, by the way, is out campaigning with McCain!
Our Lord did not tell his disciples to stand by and let the devil triumph, and then try to save them. He said, “Go you, therefore, and preach to all the nations!” Not later.... NOW!!
I’m sick of the “We’re so screwed” mentality. I’m sick of Rush and his defeatest jocularity. We need to get off our narrow philosophical soap-boxes and work to save the White House from the liberal democrats.

Thanks, BatWing!! It’s time to stop the whining and boo-hooing. We MUST stop Obama!!
The endless repetition of McCain’s sins on this site is a waste of band-width. It is accomplishing nothing except making it’s authors feel smug in their philosophical purity! What crap!
And, meanwhile, just for starters, the Supreme Court will be handed over to the liberals for the next 25 years!

National Security that protects our liberty from any threat is priority number one. McCain is the only candidate who not only understands this but recognizes the threats that exist.
As an American, this leads me to vote against Obama or Hillary because of the threat their policies pose to individual liberty both directly (taxes, nationalized health care, assaults on the free market, etc) and indirectly (appeasing enemies, ignoring threats, abandoning Iraq, etc.).
Liberty loses big time under a Clinton or Obama Presidency. I cannot sit out live with the fact that I did nothing at the voting booth to stop it.

I’m sick of the “We’re so screwed” mentality.
pp, if you are refering to me as I’ve used that expression several times, I only used it in reference with what will happen if Obama gets elected ,a point on which we seem to be on the same page. Yes, I believe that Obama needs to be stopped from achieving that goal and that a conservative defeatist attitude serves no useful purpose in
that regard.
docdave - 12:05pm on 05/16/2008
For myself I’m not after punishing the Republicans. I’m just not going to support someone that on balance will be bad for the country.
I don’t even know that McCain would be less bad for the country since he would mute the opposition in Congress.
By the way if the two oldest justices, John Paul Stevens and Ruth Buzzy Ginsburg, are replaced by Obama appointees, how is the El Supremo Court changed?

HG and DocDave: You guys are RIGHT ON!! I am sick to death of the whining shills on this site who think it’s more important to bash John McCain than it is to stop Barack Obama!
DocDave, I NEVER had you in mind. Check out some of the childish “We’re So Screwed” avatars - and other defeatist messages like them - on this site!
Meanwhile, folks like both of you, BatWing and me, let this crap go on, day after day and we are too polite to call it what it is.

Whistler: That’s just plain bullshit. If you sit on your whining philosophical ass, Obama wins.
What guarantee do you have that Obama will only get to name two justices?
Can you guarantee that Obama will only serve one term?
What guarantee do you have that the country will suddenly wake up and stop the liberal juggernaught?
You don’t have such guarantees because none exists! Are you really willing to risk the nation because you find McCain distasteful?
