Apartments are worse. Mine tells me I must have white drapes over the large patio windows so that everyones is uniform, quiet time begins at 10:30, if your kids come to see you, they must park two blocks away and walk, if they stay overnight they must have a pass obtained in advance on their windshields. We have been threated with eviction or having to chip in on the costs of clean up if a kid in our building marks on the hall walls. A few calls reassured me that they can’t do that, but I bet they try. I paid $125.00 to avoid my grand-daughter being towed away for parking in the wrong place. Don’t get many visitors anymore. I don’t approve of marking on the walls and believe in the “broken windows theory” but I won’t be responsible for what someone elses kid does.

This just doesn’t seem consistant with the whole ‘land of the free’ thing. I know I will never live in close enough proximity to large quantities of other people so that I have to: paint my house a certain color, have white drapes, be quiet at 10.30pm, or not sit on my porch naked doing target practice at 10.30am. God bless the rural woods.

I just don’t understand why anyone would buy a home in a neighborhood with a homeowner’s association.

I agree, in principle! I have seen HA’s that quibbled over whether someone’s paint was eggshell or antique white, lawsuits over replacing one’s roof with something more fire retardant than wood shake. One poor fellow in Sacramento ran afoul of his homeowner’s association for flying the American flag, because it violated the “earth tone colors” of his HA.

Nonetheless, last year I moved into such a neighborhood. I have not yet run afoul of the Picayune Patrols, possibly because we have similar tastes. However, I can see the necessity for such rules in cases where, what attracts you to a neighborhood is a certain look or ambiance. You make a sizeable investment in the real estate and then one or more of your neighbors deviates from the standard with questionable taste.

The aesthetic of a neighborhood can translate into monetary advantage or harm. This is my “investment” house. When I retire, I’ll move, stick my flag, wreath and dead Santa display where ever I please. Until then, I’ll follow the (sometimes stupid) rules.

PE: Of course, your point is that it’s a matter of personal choice, right? You do a cost/benefit calculation, and then make your housing decision.  I don’t like HAs, either, but no one is forcing me to live in such a place.  If I thought the advantages of living in such a place outweighed the disadvantages, I would make that choice.  Not all that complicated, but then I’m not much of a “victim”.

Any of those H.A. morons ever heard of just plain ol’ “peace on earth?” Nothin’ but brotherly love behind that statement, man.  Groovy.

In response to Proofreader emeritus, the complaints were because some people had children in Iraq, and others thought it was a symbol of Satan..  Not because of aesthetics.
I bet people besides Ms Jensen have wreaths out for Christmas in that neighborhood.  It seems that those idiots would want peace because it would mean their kids could come home.  Bob Kearns is a retard as well.  What’s wrong with people these days? :/ I’d go to jail before I’d ever pay that fine.

Jeff: Just between you, me and the fence post, I don’t think the objections to the American flag I mentioned were really over the color scheme...but I see your point.

Anyone know where I can buy one of those Peace Symbol Xmas wreaths to give to the HA pres down the street?

Meg Brizzolara - 08:11am on 11/29/2006

Appearantly the ‘peace’ symbol bears a striking resemblence to ‘Nero’s cross’.  That is the offensive symbol these Christians are objecting to.

Personally, I see the striking resemblence to..
“The Footprint of the American Chicken”.

So if these anti-war kooks wish to display their cowardice by branding their front doors with such an appropriate symbol, have at it.

You mean, there are people who actually LIKE war?? And Death? And see it as cowardice if they don’t want their children to die for Haliburton? I wonder what they call this bloodthirsty disorder?
