Whatever happened to the style of journalism where they simply told us what happened at a specific time and place?

That’s the style of journalism we saw here.

1) What happened? The President said "kerfuffle."

2) At what time and place did it happen? It happened during a question-and-answer session after a speech at the City Club in Cleveland.

The President’s use of the word "kerfuffle" is directly attirbutalbe to WSJ/OpinionJournal.com editor James Taranto, who popularlized the formerly arcane word in his colums during the past presidential election.

The word itself carries the connotation of something of modest consequence which has foolishly been blown out of proportion.  Thus the "plainspoken" President’s use of the word is, of course, correct.

President Bush obviously reads blogs.

The word ‘kerfuffle’ has enjoyed a renaissance in the blogosphere.

It sounds like some kind of viennese pastry, if you ask me.

I heard President Bush say that this afternoon and I had to doubletake.  I rewound the Tivo and played it back a couple of times.  Yup, he said kerfuffle.  Dubya made me laugh today..  Thanks Mr. President.

Why was it an important detail worth devoting several paragraphs of reporting to?  Because journalists think the President is stupid and doesn’t know big words like "kerfuffle."

I’m thinking of a number…

Good for you.

Your mind-reading skills extend only to journalists? Aw, shucks.

Dave - 08:03pm on 03/20/2006

It isn’t so much mind reading as simple observation.

You should try it some time.

Did anyone notice that the President seemed as though he was enjoying himself today?  Even the personal plugs by questioners didn’t really phase him.  He was in it for the long haul and looked like he was having fun.  That is what I would have wrote about, hell, I might even podcast about it tomorrow.  But he did say kerfuffle and that sort of through me.  You just don’t hear that word everyday.
